Watching with others

In a thread about UNICA which went a bit off topic into festivals, Dave mentioned the difference between watching in a small or a large group (one of the benefits of festivals, obv). He's absolutely right and I'd argue the difference is between watching alone and even a small group is at least as si...

Re: UNICA

I realise everyone here knows it but let's be clear BIAFF and UNICA are open to the makers of amateur films. "Amateur film" makers, not amateur "film makers". Industry professionals are entitled to enter and indeed many do. Perhaps if we are somehow able to make this clearer, the...

Re: BIAFF 2022

Mr Roberts! How happy i am to see you back! It is indeed £243 for the Novotel (but that does include all events, Gala Dinner, 2 lunches and the inevitable single room supplement (we could have shared - and maybe started a rumour or two   ) I don't consider that particularly bad value. I wa...

Re: Film & Video Maker Magazine - Back Issues

I'm sure there was someone on here a few years back hoping to replenish their stock of old FVMs. With luck they'll come across this before you sling them out.

Might be worth posting on the IAC Facebook page and getting Jan to put them on the website (low traffic, but you only need one taker)

Re: Kids appearing in your films

Howard, that's very interesting. What is the licence you apply for and receive? Do Dudley Metropolitan Council (or whoever you're under) issue a "filming children" licence? (I'm asking out of curiosity, so please don't go to any effort to dig one out)

Have only skimmed it so far but looks like a very good production. Surely not just available light this time though? Love the shot from just below the coffee table looking up towards Derek past the wine glasses!

Re: Kids appearing in your films

Howard, are you talking about under 16s who are knowingly in the film and whose parents have given permission, or under 16s who, as in Tom's examle, just happen to be in a public place and in the background of a shot? As for school performances, we regularly films them and are often irritated by par...

Re: Paul Kittel's Zoom evening

Quite right that it should be removed. Although prepared beforehand it was part of his personal appearance. If enough people are interested I'm sure Paul would either make the film available by request or possibly arrange another evening. It really was very good. Although i've been fortunate to have...

Re: The shorcomings of a film

In response to a comment made by Tim earlier, the director whose name you couldn’t remember who doesn’t like to rehearse is probably William Friedkin. In the excellent documentary “Friedkin Uncut”, he says, “Rehearsal is for sissies. What I’m after is spontaneity.” I’m of the same opinion and keep ...

Re: Virtual Video Group IAC Membership Application

We are fortunate in having members who find this sort of technical challenge fun. Of course once they have solved the problem it ceases to be fun, so we have to provide them with the next problem - in our case creating a hybrid meeting, where we meet in person, but the meeting can be streamed to rem...

Re: Virtual Video Group IAC Membership Application

Not as easy as I thought then! I only uses music from the YouTube Music Library, that solves the YouTube problem. Well done with the Virtual Surrey Boarders Comp, I will try and put a film in if you do it again. Did you arrange and chair the Zoom Tim? Nah - that was above my pay grade and skill set...

Re: Virtual Video Group IAC Membership Application

Even with the best will in the world it is going to take two or theree editions before FVM goes online (and we all know there are many implications with this). Firstly "Is FVM going online? Sorry if I misled. I simply meant IF it went online. I have no knowledge that any such plans exist. Thir...

Re: The shorcomings of a film

All that work certainly pays off, Michael. Your interviews have a very distinct style. Your subjects appear to be relaxed and just chatting, socially about whatever the topic is. Your films reveal much about the interviewee - indeed they are frequently more about the personalities behind whatever th...

Re: DVD and Blu-ray discs

Good point about the games consoles, Ken. I suspect most of us here don't have games consoles or any interest in them, so we probably don't consider that as an option. I don't know how widespread Playstations/X-Boxes are among the under 40s (or under 50s) probably moreso than would have guessed.

Re: Suggested One Minute films

One of the side effects of asking for comments from the floor is - you receive comments from the floor! Unfortunately there are a few who like to show off their "knowledge" of film making by seeking out as many faults as they can and concentrating on those. There are also those who love to...
