Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

Ned, clearly a slight technical hitch there! Probably a touch of human error. An email to David Newman will sort things out.

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

There were 168 entries this year. I would think that everyone has had their results by now... but for some reason very few people have commented on this forum about what they thought of their awards and judges’ comments. There will be many people who are delighted with their results (such as me) but...

Re: How do you learn to make better films?

I can’t actually find any record of Oscar Wilde saying that. What I DID find was this quote from Cecil Beaton: “Perhaps the world’s second-worst crime is boredom; the first is being a bore.” As I recently said on my Facebook page, I was considering making a short film called THE ELECTRIC DRILL but i...

Re: How do you learn to make better films?

I would suggest that the phrase 'a well told story' implies that the film is indeed well made, otherwise the story isn't well told and it's just a good story badly or indifferently done, a wasted opportunity. The phrase 'technically good film' brings to mind a Diamond award winning film from a few y...

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

Thanks for your congrats Richard. As you know, I was one of the judges for LUCKY NELSON and it was me who did the write-up. We all liked it a lot! The 4 star award was a unanimous decision. I must say it's most odd regarding that comment on the music that wasn't there in one of your films. Maybe the...

Re: How do you learn to make better films?

I've learned a lot from watching a huge number of feature films over the years and not just watching them for entertainment but studying the director's style, the rhythm of the editing, camera placement, etc. and seeing if I can pick up some tips. There's an interesting director called Joanna Hogg, ...

Re: How do you learn to make better films?

Tim Stannard said: "Howard Smith is a god example - there's little doubt that his films have improved." (Sorry Howard I corrected Tim's typo - Dave) Before you correct what might be a typographical error, Tim, I must thank you for elevating me to the status of a god. Perhaps I should start...

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

Many thanks Tom!! I always had the ambition to be a "top amateur" and now I feel I've finally made it after all these years! I really am delighted and am continuing the liquid celebrations on a daily basis.
Jill, I look forward very much to watching your films in due course.

Phil Martin

The first BIAFF I attended was in 2008. The main film I remember from that year was the 5 star award winner IN THE NATIONAL INTEREST, an excellent drama made by Phil Martin. I saw Phil and more of his films at subsequent BIAFFS but not for the last few years. Does anyone know if Phil is still with u...

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

Thank you very much Tim. I must say that I’m beyond delighted that I’ve hit the heights and achieved FACI(M) status. Regarding the delay in results going out, it must be that David Newman has been having severe technical problems. I know of some others who are still awaiting their results too. Hey, ...

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

I hadn't actually noticed that link to who has achieved the honours until you pointed it out, John. Wow, just 10 of us with a FACI(M). What an exclusive club.

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

John, you can read all about Fellowships and other honours on the IAC website: https://www.theiac.org.uk/iac/fellowships/laciandmaci.html FACI(M) is the Master Movie Maker Fellowship of the IAC. It’s very difficult to achieve. You have to accumulate “5 points” which has to include an IAC Diamond Awa...

Thank you Michael! Achieving a FACI(M) means a lot to me so I didn’t want to hang about.
