Re: Filming shows in 4K and cropping

Tim, I've recently acquired a Panasonic GH5 and I've used it to film two stage productions in 4K. One at a theatre and one on a stage in Sutton Coldfield Town Hall. My guess is that I was further away than you would be at a school, but I'm not sure how much difference that would make. How wide the '...

Re: BIAFF 2017 Results

I agree with what Dave has said. Except that I would add that I think it is worth looking closely at the comments the judges make and thinking about whether they are useful. If they are useless, discard them. Every judge is an independent viewer who has some distance from the film (which we, as make...

Re: BIAFF 2017 Results

Congratulations to everyone for all those good results. And especially congratulations to John! I'm so sorry to hear about your brother. But how BRILLIANT that you've done so well with your little film. I'm feeling very happy too! My club - Sutton Coldfield Movie Makers - will have FIVE films shown ...

Re: FUTURE - regions and festivals

I can completely understand the UNICA young people’s pleasure in the friends they made while film making. I think the key thing is that they were working together at something they loved doing. Like Tim I have a horror of social occasions for film makers that are unrelated to film making. Like Dave ...

Re: Are Film Competitons a Lottery?

Yes, Michael, I also dislike the idea of awarding points for particular aspects of film making. And I agree with you that gut reaction is the first response. But if I'm judging a competition, I do go back and think about reasons why I liked one film more than another. I do this partly as a check tha...

Are Film Competitions a Lottery?

I'd be interested in people's views on the issues I raised in the article in the latest FVM. The only reaction I've had so far is a comment that many clubs put on competitions as an incentive for film makers to finish their films. I know that for me competitions have been a HUGE incentive for finish...

I can't resist a question about The Question.
If you tear a page out of a book isn't it a whole sheet of paper? :?

Re: BIAFF 2015 entries

Like you, Tim, I feel a little guilty about my joy. My head is in the clouds. I broke through to my first 5***** award with my "The Patient Fisherman" and I am also delighted with a 4**** rating for "Space Invasion".

See you all at Sittingbourne.

Re: WANTED: 1-Minute Movies with visual action / stories

I can't match that wonderful film! And I haven't made any comedies. In fact I haven't made anything that is near the sort of standard you're looking for. But I am interested in the One Minute Movie. I love the challenge of telling a whole story in 60 seconds. Here are two (which have no dialogue) th...

Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS

It has been suggested that the best judges of our films would be club members. Last night we had a small competition at our club. There were 5 films from five different clubs. None made by our own members. The members of my club were the judges. We were instructed to rate the films 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4t...

Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS

In some countries there are training programmes for judges. For example in Holland I believe that there are two levels of courses. One for club level judges and one for 'official' jury members. They teach such things as how to analyse films and how to write appraisals. I undertand that in Holland yo...

Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS

Ned, I’m amused by your image of BIAFF judges. Were you thinking of the PHD student when you described BIAFF judges as ‘ageing’? (I should think he is in his mid-twenties. ) Did you have in mind the professor of film studies when you were thinking of BIAFF judges as being ignorant of world cinema? P...

Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS

Peter, I am very sorry if I didn't make it clear that I wasn't giving you advice. I intended to say that I was agreeing with your comment "I share Willy's anxieties about whether judges will be interested." and continuing the discussion by saying how I deal with this particular problem. I ...

Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS

Ghosh it is easy to say something which isn’t clear! Tim, I was writing about myself as a film maker. I am at a loss to know how I could possibly be interpreted as implying that someone (who, I wonder?) has not given thought to whether to make a film (which film, I wonder?) more interesting to a gen...
