Re: BIAFF 2019 at Birmingham

It seems that one of the images was not perfect. Perhaps that's right, but I don't know which one. That's a bit annoying. Willy, you've picked up one of the problems that recurs in judges' comments: making a statement/criticism which doesn't help the filmmaker to do better next time because it's to...

Re: BIAFF 2019 at Birmingham

Bob...those comments weren't about one of my films! They were about a film made by someone at my club who had never made fiction film before.

Re: BIAFF 2019 at Birmingham

How sad that BIAFF has lost entries from those members of Bob's club. I hope they haven't lost the confidence to make films? I completely understand why BIAFF means something to you, Bob. Actually I don't think any of us would bother to enter if it didn't mean something to us! And I also chime in wi...

Re: BIAFF 2019 at Birmingham

Well done Bob! Most impressive! And yes! I'm sure you're right that what's needed is to grab the emotions. Howard, don't be downhearted - I'm sure another panel or the same panel on a different day would have judged your films differently. Anyway, we all know that you make consistently good films. T...

Re: BIAFF 2019 at Birmingham

Bob, I bet you did at least as well as me and my friend Debbie with our film Lady Macbeth Sleepwalking! We got 2 stars and such a damning judge's comments that I had to laugh :D

Translation software

I have a mass of footage in French. Unfortunately I don't speak French though I understand a bit. Ideally I'd like to find translation software which would translate clips so that I understand properly what's being said, to help me with a rough edit. NB I know that any such software wouldn't be very...

Re: Data protection Act

It's disappointing that the IAC hasn't provided any guidance to clubs on the new data protection regs. I heard a rumour that they were going to, but my club hasn't received anything and I can't see anything on the IAC website, and the rules come into force on Friday! On a creative arts website (&quo...

Re: BIAFF 2018 AT HARROGATE

Welcome to Martin! It was really nice to meet you and Kerry. Good that you've found the IAC and that you enjoyed your first BIAFF. Congratulations on getting a 4 star and a 3 star award with your first entries. I've just watched them online. I loved the THE POLE LINER! It had me laughing out loud. M...

Re: Filming shows in 4K and cropping

Tom, if you vary your exposure as you go along, do you have obvious changes of exposure in your video? And what if so, what do you do about it?

Re: Filming shows in 4K and cropping

Tom, I didn't mean to say anything unkind about the SD900! Paula Webster has just won the BEST PHOTOGRAPHY prize at BIAFF for her film Tango in the Wind which is shot with a 920 - a slightly later version of the SD900 - supplemented by a few drone shots! I love my SD900 and were it not for my infatu...

Re: BIAFF 2018 RESULTS

Congratulations to all you FIVE STAR high achievers! Great Stuff. Just to make people realise that not everyone got five stars, and that it's OK to get fewer than 5 stars, I'd like to say that I got THREE STARS for my film Feel Good Fire Breathing . I'm delighted with the award and am also chuffed t...

Re: Filming shows in 4K and cropping

Tim, I wouldn't be able to argue the case one way or another about which camera you should go for. Most of my filming is 'run and gun'. For that I like something SMALL and a light tripod. I don't want to lug a heavy camera and heavy tripod around. The GH5 appealed to me because it is small. Unlike t...
