Re: DEADLINE FOR IAC WEBSITE COMPETITION and BIAFF 31 Jan

Fraught, you are getting yourself into a terrible state! It will all happen in due course and do you not have a very good idea as to how you've scored? I can honestly say that, in over forty years of entering film festivals, I've hardly ever been surprised by a judgement, good or bad. I can classify...

Re: Classification

I really think we are in danger of getting our knickers in a twist over a situation that is so highly unlikely that it can be ignored. The content that the legislation is aimed at has been described in the above posts, it doesn't need a brain surgeon to recognise it and none of us are likely to incl...

Re: TELL IT YOUR WAY - winner

Dave, it's absolutely brilliant, one of the best short films I've ever seen. The prescribed words are so cleverly worked into the script, what an imaginative mind to manage this! Apart from this the technique, camerawork and editing is impeccable. Willy, if you're listening, thank you for bringing i...

Re: Classification

Poor old 'snuffy with cold', wish you better! I think that this regulation is intended to prevent circulation of pornographic and otherwise undesirable material. If there are doubts about a given production then yes, classification might then be sensible, but otherwise I'd forget about it. Dave (in ...

Re: 8MM CINE FILM COPYING TO VIDEO

Unless you chaps really enjoy messing about with shutter speeds and frame rates I repeat the advice I posted last year on this topic, ask the kind and talented Tom Hardwick to do your film transfers for you, it will save you endless trouble and, I'm sure, won't break the bank!

Re: Archiving

I've just returned from the Production / Broadcast show at Earls Court (where by the way I met many IAC people, notably Tom Hardwick & John Astin) and every Professional film maker I spoke to uses and archives in the Apple ProRes codec, so I don't think that Col's pessimistic view is justified b...

Re: Archiving

As always, Dave puts things into perspective. Archiving for most of us might not be such an issue as it is with the production companies and broadcasters. His suggestion of transferring to newer drives every few years is however sensible, these are getting cheaper by the year and they can also be us...

Re: Exactly what constitutes 'Amateur'?

Oh dear, this topic will not go away! We could of course abolish all restrictions and demarkation and allow anyone to enter any festival. Would a film director such as say, Sam Mendes or Michael Winterbottom want to enter a film for BIAFF? Of course he wouldn't. What therefore are we afraid of? Prof...

Re: SARNIA SHORTS (The successor to Guernsey Lily)

Sorry, yes, Guernsey! Still, Jersey and Guernsey aren't very far apart. Willy, all digital video starts as a file, zeros and ones as Tom Hardwick will tell you. Tape was, and still is for some purposes, a useful way to record and play the pictures but the basis is still a digital file and that's bec...

Re: SARNIA SHORTS (The successor to Guernsey Lily)

Col, we're going off topic rather which Dave will mention but I understand that ProRes HQ is the best way to protect HD quality when exporting as a file. Then my 50 GB file won't fit on any of the discs that you mention will it? Dave, I don't hate anything, actually my latest film is just 30 minutes...

Re: SARNIA SHORTS (The successor to Guernsey Lily)

With my HD films I archive a .mov file in the ProRes 422 HQ codec but that has to go onto a drive because my last film was 55Gb's in that file. Couldn't go onto a DVD or a single layer BD. For some competitions and festivals I lend them a portable drive for them to download the file. What does Dave ...

Re: When are documentaries not movies?

Peter, I face your problem almost every time I make a documentary. One way to overcome background noise is to fit a tie clip mic to your subject (either wired or radio). This should give you a higher level for the voice. At the same time you use the second channel for your other mic (probably on the...

Re: copying Blu-Ray videos

Roy, I assumed in my first reply that you have a BD burner, either free standing or built in to your kit. You obviously need a BD burner to make Blu-Ray discs from your HD material. All I do is make sure my burner is connected to my computer (MacPro), open Toast Pro 11 and drag the HD (ProRes 422 HQ...

Re: copying Blu-Ray videos

Titanium Toast Pro 11 will do almost anything in the copying and burning line. Be sure though that you have the BD plug in.
