I was not judging this year ...

It is possible that the judged saw a subtitled version, but we were shown a different one at the festival.

Looking beyond the Ten Best Competition ... which I once helped to judge ... I think the magazine and its key contributors did an enormous amount to raise the morale of amateur film makers. Tony Rose, Ivan Watson, Alan Cleave, Tony Shapps, John Wright, Edwyn Gilmour and co wrote with such enthusiasm...

Just to reassure people who have been asking ... There will be a small change in BIAFF timetables on Saturday afternoon. The BIAFF festival online screenings will take a long break on Saturday afternoon to allow those who wish to do so, to observe the one-minute silence at 3pm and to watch the funer...

Jan and I have long thought that BIAFF is a little too miserly with 5-star awards. When you have seen what's on offer at BIAFF 2021, perhaps we can discuss that more.

The timetable for the festival will be online so soon as Jan gets the details of the Saturday shows, which will be in two separate online cinemas.

That is yet more sad new, Howard. The two of them were great ambassadors for A-V and helped bring sequence-makers and film-makers together. They were also extraordinarily kind people.

Working as a projectionist at the BIAFF judging weekend one year, I watched in wonder as Reg Lancaster began by voicing strong criticism of a film, then over a few minutes talked himself (out loud) into the opposite opinion. Congratulations to all. Anyone who can even finish and submit a film to competition is doing well! I have not wanted to disturb David Newman to ask about why the results are slow in coming, but having seen a couple of his emails I note he is not just saying that someone's film will be shown at BIAFF...

The higher the standard of technique, the more I comment on the story/plot/audience-experience. For club contests or films at lower star levels I may throw in the occasional comment about technique, but only if the problem has distracted me from the content of the film.
