Has the Zoom finally gone?

During BIAFF I was not struck by the usual number of zoom shots (whether moving in or out). There were some, of course, but far fewer than in recent years. Have we finally escaped from the tyranny of "the camera has a zoom so I must use it" syndrome? Whenever we have a new technical possib...

The Cost of Film Making

People who worked with cine film remember the days when you counted the seconds of each shot carefully because film was such an expensive medium. One film maker told me that running 16mm was like having a sewing-machine on your shoulder stitching up pound notes as it clattered away. Video media : ta...

Just a small point: Life's Little Gaps was made by someone who had been to film school. He now works as a grip (pulling cables and moving lights) in the film industry from time to time. You can read about his production in a lot of detail on the main website. It has puzzled me why IAC set its face a...

For a brighter view of the festival take a look at the main website, especially http://www.fvi.org.uk/central/biaff2008/biaff2008-event.html where you can see some fun pictures, details of the new FACIs and read Romy Van Krieken's very funny toast to the IAC. There are also more articles by film mak...

Sorry to hear that you were caught by the flu-like bug too, Mike. I know Billy Ellwood, Peter and Mary Rouillard all had it. I suppose it is a risk when you have so many people packed together in a hot hall for hours on end. Any bugs can spread easily. Hope all you sufferers make a quick, full recov...

Recommended movies on the web - UPDATED

In various threads we recommend movies we have seen on various websites. I suggest we keep this thread exclusively for such recommendations. If you like the idea then please add links to movies you think we would enjoy - your own or other people's films. But let us keep comment on them to a differen...

And now my projection days for the IAC are over. Billy, I hope not. Your mini-cinema shows went very smoothly as I mentioned earlier. You did all the film-makers proud by presenting their films to the best advantage in the two sessions of yours I saw. Indeed I heard nothing but praise for all the N...

I think it only affects DVD's. Mini DV's will always be projected non-letterbox. I don't think so! Either source - DVD or MiniDV can hold a letterboxed, anamorphic or Academy ratio print. As I suggested in another thread different pieces of equipment treat them differently. Some adjust to make the ...

I use Premiere Pro but have sometimes noticed a similar problem. Usually I use the menu option to export the film to another place on the hard drive. This makes sure it is all rendered etc. Then I load the exported version into a new project, set the camera to record and play the new project so that...

I have seen `Amateur` nature films, and they aren`t really very good. Sorry, Ian, but you clearly have not seen these films. Florent van Opstal makes superb close-up studies of birds and insects. Mark Kapteijns made equally good images. Some amateurs can make great movies of this sort. Take a look ...

Willy did get the right impression: BIAFF 2008 was a success. As everyone has said there was a buzz about it and the Saturday shows went very well. The Gala Dinner was good, the Fellowship awards well-deserved ... and thank goodness there was no "entertainment" afterwards. (In the past we ...

I for one will say a Big Thank you to all the organisers... Wow - Stephen - you are right! Everyone who was there does owe a huge vote of thanks to the event organisers of NERIAC and the competition managers - Brian and Alice Dunckley for all their hard work. I wanted to comment on the problems but...

Well I can confirm what Billy said ... the Friday night one-minute movie show was plagued with problems of the hiccuping video kind. There are many ways to show videos direct from computer and maybe more experiment was required. There was also some silly confusion when the numbers on the films Billy...

Recycle your old camera

This article refers to digital still cameras, but it might be applied to camcorders too. http://blog.webshots.com/?p=874 If you do give away an old still camera, AV workers and movie-makers could even work with the child to put some of their better images into a sequence or simple movie. We treasure...

Has the IAC ever thought of having professional film-makers to judge? Yes - and it is often a disaster. Within the industry people point out any mistakes bluntly - after all everyone there is supposed to be a professional at their job and any delays can be very expensive. Professional judges tend t...
