Strange question, what is your objective? In a prepared drama then lights will be used and there will be a lighting plot, in a run and gun documentary it may be impossible to use lights. An on-camera light may be used for interviews. My guess is that most n-c film makers use lights sometimes.

We are in the middle of a TV sales boom here in the USA at present, these are 16:9 and HDTV capable, LCDs and plasmas. The smaller screens are 720 and the larger screens 1080. We have the usual incompatibility as the transmissions are 1080 60i or 30p. We can feed a 1080 60i signal into a 720 TV and ...

Could you share your experience using Procoder to transcode PAL files to NTSC please. What is Procoder Express, I couldn't find this on the Grass Valley site?

There is news of a new version, v3 to be released in the near future and hope this addresses HD and HDV.

Thanks

One of the reasons I keep projects on external drives is that in my professional days it was much easier to re-edit a client's piece some time after it had been completed. Just hook up the drive and make the revisions, most often this was with foreign language versions where shots had to be extended...

File handling

My studio set up is a Mac for editing (FCP Studio) and a PC for office work. Both have external, firewire "hot swap" caddies and a selection of trays with HDDs of various capacities. I use the Granite Digital System (USA). As HDDs are so cheap now, I am paying about 40 cents per gigabyte a...

This is a replay of the 19th Century Academicians versus the Impressionists. The impressionists created a new way of looking at things that transgressed all the "rules" of painting as defined by the teaching academies of the day. The resulting uproar in the world of art divided the artists...

The film was made by a lady member of AMPS and won the award for the best entry by an AMPS member that year. There are situations where it is impossible to use a tripod or carefully focus before the event to be recorded is under way. However, if the information is essential to the film then so be it...

A few years ago I saw a film that followed the life and eventual death of an anorexic young woman. Most of the shots were hand held, often the framing was less than perfect. There were stills and interviews, wavy shots of documents, oof shots, a true "gun and run" documentary. It was rivet...

The use of the low energy light bulbs in a small reflector may work for you. They run much cooler than other bulbs and draw much lower current for a given light output. They can be found with different color temperatures so can be matched up to the camera white balance. An inexpensive method worth t...

Let me add my apology, I know that Bob is a small (one man?) operation and I know how tough that can be. His country & western disk, "She Says" is excellent and works well here in the US. So, hang in there Bob and keep us up to date on your developments.

I just checked out this mailing and noticed that not only has Bob updated his website he has also drastically updated his prices. Now between $30 and $49 per CD all originally at $17 when I bought them and thought them good value. Not so sure now.

Ian thanks for mentioning "the age thing". With the internet age is not an issue, I have no idea how old the people who post here are and it doesn't matter. It is a problem with Festivals where the judges are likely to be in their 50s and on up. We have a young President of AMPS now and he...

The American War of Independence was 1776, there was a war of 1812 when the British burnt down the White House. There is a good book "Past Imperfect - A History According to the Movies". Almost every historic film rewrites history to some degree, some films give a complete rewrite. I agree...
