Re: BIAFF 2012 RESULTS

Sorry Mike, I did mean to mention you as well! Dave's idea is certainly one that I will follow, a drink and natter before the Saturday evening reception but it doesn't leave much time for us older ones to have a kip before dinner! The people who can't make it will surely make themselves known at oth...

Re: Club Films on Youtube

I can't see any disadvantage in posting films on YouTube (or Vimeo for that matter). Why be afraid of comments? Every time we show a film we are exposing ourselves to criticism (or, rarely, praise) and to try and avoid that is surely nonsense. My grouse regarding films on line is that they are not d...

Re: BIAFF 2012 RESULTS

Doubles all round then (on me!) next week in Weymouth. How are we going to meet? I'm getting there hopefully in time for a bite on Friday evening but others may not. We could do it through Big Dave (he's easy to find) or put a note on the official IAC desk, there's bound to be one. Pre lunch on Satu...

Re: BIAFF 2012 RESULTS

Pete, you are joking surely? I made just such a film, with that exact title, which won an International Award ( today's Diamond) in 1975!!! You must have seen it from the library I imagine. It was I suppose, more documentary than anything, but you're right, classifying into categories would be conte...

Re: BIAFF 2012 RESULTS

With all due respect to Willy (and I do respect him and his films greatly) I have never thought that 'dramatised' documentaries work, neither amateur nor professional. They just don't convince, in fact they really aren't documentary at all really, just stories based on a factual event. I've now forg...

Re: BIAFF 2012 RESULTS

Willy, thanks so much for that link, I agree with you, what a wonderful film, although I'm not as sure as you that it would get a Diamond. It highlights all that needs to be said about our treatment of our planet, but obviously in a limited way. The final caption seems to indicate that this is a tra...

Re: BIAFF 2012 RESULTS

I don't think that it's true that documentaries are not appreciated. I've only ever made documentaries (anything non fictional is thus defined), and worldwide have always been heartened by responses to many films I've made these last 45 years. I do find however that great care does have to be taken ...

Re: What happens after Videomaker?

Oh, happy old times! I think the peak time was in the days of Amateur Cine World (awful name, great mag) which was replaced by the even better Movie Maker (another awful name) edited by the wonderful Tony Rose and his deputy Alan Cleave. Is Alan still with us I ask? It's a great pity that the tradit...

Re: UNCIPAR

Sorry Fraught about your experience of Withoutabox. I've heard similar from others but I have never failed to receive an acknowledgement (receipt of your submission should show up on your list of details). I frequently get a nice letter, even if they don't select the film. Last year I only had two o...

Re: UNCIPAR

Look it up on the website Withoutabox. They handle most of the festivals being held throughout the world. I registered with them last year when I wanted to enter a film in multiple festivals and they're great. One big form and then it's easy to enter anywhere. They may not list your festival but it'...

Re: Changing your club name

Oh dear, I'm very much in the minority on this topic. I don't suppose the name matters anyway, after all do the initials IAC enlighten the wider public?

Re: Changing your club name

Sorry to be in the minority but I hate the term 'movie', not because of it's American connotation (although that doesn't help) but because it is associated in the public mind with 'Home Movies'. My choice would always be FILM. It is true that this is (was) a medium but it is also generic. We go to t...

Re: DEADLINE FOR IAC WEBSITE COMPETITION and BIAFF 31 Jan

Yes, well done Emily, I've been making films for nearly 50 years and have been lucky enough to have experienced top awards, but this year got the same as you. There you go, one old man on the way down, one young lady on the way up! Can I make a plea to Dave and our fellow correspondents? Can we arra...

Re: DEADLINE FOR IAC WEBSITE COMPETITION and BIAFF 31 Jan

Yes, it is correct that you are told about awards when you get the initial letter. Last year I had very early information but (Sods Law) couldn't attend the festival! This year, only a four, so a Saturday showing I'm told.

Re: DEADLINE FOR IAC WEBSITE COMPETITION and BIAFF 31 Jan

Yes, they always work top down. I heard today, exactly what I expected (4), as I wrote earlier I don't think I've ever been wrong in my forecast. Willy's must have been good for 18!!
