Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS
I agree with Dave W in that this is a great idea, and maybe something I ought to put to my club as well (we've already watched and discussed some of the NERIAC showreels) However I have a couple of issues. The first one being that club members reading the same article on what makes a good movie befo...

With apologies to Mike Shaw for copying and pasting his excellent starter :D Editing - Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 11 (just upgraded to 12 but haven't used it yet) DVD Creation - Sony DVD Architect Studio 5 Sound - Sony Sound Forge 10, Audacity used very occasionally Music Generation - Cubase as I us...

Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS
Having just 'come down' from my first ever BIAFF I would like to take this opportunity to say what a wonderful experience I had over the weekend and to thank many far more capable film-makers than I for taking out some of their valuable time in the coffee breaks to chat with me and make me feel very...

Re: Image licensing
Ah yes - I think I'm getting it now, my brain must've skipped over the word 'use' in Dave's post. Of course any major motion picture (where credits are given) must presumably have received permission from the copyright owners/publishers directly, therefore Billy Bragg/Queen can say 'absolutely no wa...

Re: Image licensing
I wonder if the lack of credits for the use of other people's work stems from the rules of the IAC Music Copyright Scheme which forbids giving credits for music used under those licences. (My guess is that the music industry thought it better not to be seen to be connected to the use of the tracks ...

Re: Image licensing
Thanks for the replies, Dave and Tim :) I like to think of myself as being careful when I put a film together and don't use footage or images from another source unless I have permission. However I do see an awful lot of footage in other films that has blatantly been 'lifted' from other sources, or ...

Re: Image licensing
Hi Dave - I hope you had a great time :) Thank you for the reply and for clarifying what I thought - just a quick question though, what about at club level? I have seen many films where images or footage have obviously been 'lifted' from TV or a DVD, even if it's a few seconds worth, and no credit h...

Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS
I have to strongly disagree, though this is just my opinion and not aimed at any particular judge/club/competition - but I've found in my (very limited) experience that more than a few judges at 'grass roots'/club level to be the most subjective and dismissive of all. I also don't believe that there...

Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS
I think in principle that sounds like a great idea Jill :D But... Everyone who passes their driving test still drives their car in the style and manner of their choosing. I would also be interested in the 'training' - surely a very subjective and emotive topic as film-making would therefore result i...

Re: How many special prizes do we need at a festival?
Sometimes more awards can stimulate activity and almost 'refresh' a festival or competition. The venerable annual inter-club 'South Yorkshire Amateur Film Competition' had since it's inception more than 50 years ago the single award - the 'winning' film walked away with the shield on behalf of their...

Re: Image licensing
Hi Col, thanks for the reply :) I have been in discussion with the copyright owner of the image - the sole licenser of everything contained on that image i.e. the artists work, defunct logos etc - and they have agreed that I can use the image for my next film upon payment of a licence fee. As far as...

Image licensing
Hello to everyone :D Can anyone supply me with a quick (and hopefully complete) answer regarding the licensing of an image. My next project will feature a large image, fleetingly, as part of the storyline. I've contacted the copyright holders and they have requested a small fee for licensing of the ...

Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS
Absolutely no offence taken, Peter! I always welcome thoughts and views of respected and experienced film-makers, it's the only way one can grow as a fledgling film-maker. Without wanting to fall into the trap of explaining un-seen issues and problems in order to justify the end result, a lot of the...

Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS
Thank you Col for your kind words :D I have been reading this thread with great interest and it appears the opinions of film-makers are almost as diverse as those of judges! I do consider myself to have been very lucky this year, but I don't consider myself an experienced film-maker - however very s...
