As far as commercial films are concerned I prefer to watch them in the correct aspect ratio as filmed, and the black bars to either side, when the picture is 4:3, or top and bottom when it's 2.35:1 don't bother me because, as I've said before, anything else compromises picture composition. As far as...

I personally found The Bourne Supremacy to be very hard to watch because of the relentless camera movement and very rapid cutting that made it difficult, at times, to register what was going on. This topic, funnily enough, cropped up at the recent Blackpool Film Collectors Convention when guest cele...

I think 16:9 is the way forward but it will probably take some time before everyone has access to cameras, TV's, screens and editing software that will handle it. As far as 4:3 is concerned, because stretching to wide screen distorts the picture and cropping compromises picture composition when it c...

I thought there was a problem with Joseph's faith when it was shown at BIAFF but as the makers were there and apparently didn't comment I began to doubt what I'd seen. It drives me right up the proverbial wall when I see films shown in the wrong aspect ratio as it doesn't take much effort to get it ...

We have a sony mini DV player at Dalziel and I find that responsiveness is quicker than a camera. My Canon XM2 is also a bit slow to respond to commands from the camera playback controls. For club presentations I much prefer to use the Mini DV player but I can't justify the expense for personal use.

Speaking as someone who has done some judging at various levels my reasons for doing this are to encourage people to improve their film making and to make more films. In all instances where I have been involved in first round judging all films submitted have been viewed in their entirity. Of course ...

Welcome to the forum Paddy. I suppose I sort of emigrated in the reverse direction to Dave when I moved to Scotland from Yorkshire in 1966 although it wasn't really, because although my father was a Yorkshireman my mother was Scottish and Yorkshire folk have a lot in common with the Scots. Becoming ...

Can I echo Souterman's words - Oor Willy gave us a wonderful show on Sunday and it was a truly great day that we will all remember for a long time to come. Garth has asked me to do a write up for FVM and I'll also be doing a piece for the web-site (with pictures) in the next couple of days so keep a...

Hey Stephen, thanks for sharing this interesting documentary, especially as some of my pals from Newcastle ACA were involved in the production. Will there be a follow up to show how the restoration progresses?

It isn't just for taking pictures of children or women that photographers have been picked on. I heard about a new, young member of a camera club in Glasgow who was quizzed by a policeman because he was taking photographs of the statues in George Square, right in the city centre in a very public pla...

There has been considerable debate about this in the Amateur Photographer magazine over the past couple of years with many horror stories of over zealous officials and police officers attempting to prevent legitimate photographers from going about their normal business. If you look at my article in ...

I have a little Sony HC42 that I use on holiday as it is so compact and easy to carry. It has a proper wide screen chip and I bought a Sony wide angle adaptor lens plus a supplemetary mike that sits in the hot shoe. The only things missing are an Svideo output and mic jack but it does have fire wire...

I joined the IAC in the 1970's initially for the copyright license but I very soon became aware that being a member gave me access to the broader amateur movement, good fellowship and advice. In the ensuing years I have made a tremendous number of good friends in the IAC (also in SAM here in Scotlan...

The Edinburgh Film Festival has just finished. Traditionally it has run at the same time as the Edinburgh Festival but next year it is going to take place in June. For anyone who might be interested there will also be a Glasgow Film Festival in February 2008.
