I've had the same problem with my XM2. Sometimes the computer picks up the signal from the fire wire but more often than not it tells me that the device isn't connected. fortunately I have a spare Sony camera that I can use for downloading and recording and the computer never fails to recognise that...

To make a film as a lone worker already requires so many skills. We have to be accomplished photographers/camera operators and sound recordists We need to be able to write coherent scripts, either for fiction films or for commentaries. We need to understand the techniques of editing. We have to be a...

Thanks Ned, this is something I've been looking for. I've just downloaded it and it looks great - now all I have to do is learn how to use it!

Indeed a very sensible article but I'll be surprised if it makes much difference.

I know how sad you feel Willy as my own club had to fold this year but that was because we didn't have enough people to keep it going. In Motherwell the local authority charges for rooms on a two tier basis with a cheap rate for community and non-commercial organisations, and a higher charge for com...

I've related this story before in FVM but it's worth repeating. A couple of years ago a group of members from a camera club visited Edinburgh to photograph the street entertainers at the annual Festival at a public open air event. One of the members was arrested because of a spurious and baseless al...

Yesterday I went to one of the Glasgow Art Centres where they were showing amateur films taken at the Empire Exhibition of 1938. The exhibition included a fun-fair and nearly all the films contained substantial footage of children and families enjoying a great day out. It's fascinating material beca...

Just shows what numptys these people are that they assume that an SLR is a professional camera. It's pathetic nonsense but I've heard of this happening before in Canary Wharf. It's even dafter when you consider that a compact camera will take just as good pictures. I wonder what this must be doing f...

Here's another story to illustrate how silly things have become. In today's Herald newspaper there is a story of a window dresser at a shopping centre near Glasgow who went out to take a picture of his work but was stopped by a security guard who told him he couldn't take any pictures. When he asked...

Michael makes an important point about seeking rulings; sometimes it's better not to ask the question as you might get the wrong answer. On the subject of cameras; members of the public and officialdom have some odd ideas about what is or isn't professional and many assume that just putting a camera...

The irony is that when an incident occurs (e.g the failed attack on Glasgow Airport last year) the police usually put out an appeal for members of the public to come forward with any video or photos of the incident to help them with the enquiry.

Can I refer you all to the news pages (4 & 5) in last weeks (17 May) edition of Amateur Photographer which casts considerable light on the problems that people have been experiencing across the UK, including London, and of action that is being taken at political level to try and address the situ...

Thanks everyone, the defragging seems to have done the trick and I've now successfully recorded the programme to Mini DV. The disc (130gb) was pretty full and badly needed defragging (something I should have thought of) so hopefully all will now be well. Isn't it great to know that whatever the prob...

Premiere Elements 4

Here's a techy problem maybe someone can help me with. I recently upgraded from Premiere Elements 2 to version 4. Today I've been tearing my hair out trying to copy a 23 minute project to tape. It starts to record to mini DV and then freezes for no obvious reason before completing the recording and ...
