I have used decks for sourcing clips for some years, starting with the Sony DSR30, then a DSR11 and now a Sony HVR-M15U which is HDV/DV/DVCAM compatible. I find the response rapid and accurate when batch capturing large numbers of clips. As I work across a number of formats and standards (small cass...

Willy in an earlier post you said you would give up on technical subjects. Please keep the tech questions/discussions coming as they stimulate interesting answers. Thanks

For AMPS this year we agreed to accept HDV tape 16:9 both 1080i60 and 50 as we have an HDV deck that plays both and a matching monitor. No entries were received in these formats. We did have a few letterboxed entries but most entries were 4:3. The letterboxed entries werer marked as such so no probl...

One way to put mixed aspect ratio clips into a 16:9 edit is to make them picture in picture on a black background. They can be resized, cropped, color corrected etc as required.

The real test for judging would be to have panels made up of film knowledgeable people across a wide age range who have no connection with the n-c (amateur) world. One can imagine the mayhem this would cause as films would, I suspect, be judged in a completely different way. I once heard of a Festiv...

"Art is in the eye of the beholder". In a world where everything is given a value the originator of a work of art is an integral part of the value of the work. During his lifetime you could have bought a van Gogh for the price of a glass of wine, now you would have to sell the vineyard. So...

I believe the Sony DSR 11 has been discontinued but a used one may meet the bill. It plays and records both PAL and NTSC, take the small and full size DV cassette, has Firewire and analog i/o. I used one for 6 years of heavy work and sold it on to a studio where it continues to give good service. ne...

Have just received the reports from the Guernsey Lily and these are surely a model for all judges to aim for. BIAFF reports are very good but I think our friends in Guernsey have hit a high mark in judging/reporting. The reports are interesting, informative and, yes, even entertaining. Thanks to eve...

First, thanks to the IAC for letting us have a copy to view at the AMPS/AMMA/TBW Convention. It is well made, interesting and great to fit some faces to names seen on forums and in the magazine. It tells the story very well but personally I don't think the "green martian" added anything, i...

It will be interesting to see what happens to Avid Liquid as it does not fit into the Avid professional software series. I was an early user of EditDV, became a Beta tester, saw it go to Media 100 and then to Autodesk where it fitted neither company's philosophy and then died as Cinestream 3 when it...

This was my last year as Chair of the AMPS judging panel and can only feel a sense of relief that I don't have to do it again. It is great watching other people's movies but very tough to provide useful comments. One of the problems is that of "style", for me a travel film must reveal what...

DVD storage/identification

My collection of home made DVDs and CDs is now in the dozens and to save space I keep them in the thin hard cases, stored on shelves Any suggestions about an easy way of finding what I need as there is no room on the thin spines for ID? Are there any storage systems where they can be stored and easi...

Actually the law is clear on where we can film withoutpermission. That is in any public place and any people in that public place can be included in the filming, you can also film into private places from a public location. If there are restrictions on filming in public places in specific cities it ...
