Re: Kids appearing in your films
Tim I’ve actually obtained the licences via Walsall Council as the child actors involved live in the Walsall area. I will email you more about this.

Re: Kids appearing in your films
Tim, my comment regarding local council licences was in connection with using actors under 16 in my films. I’ve always had full parental permission of course and have always insisted that at least one parent is present throughout every moment of filming. But whether or not a licence for every filmin...

Re: Kids appearing in your films
Yes I totally agree it is a sad state of affairs when school productions can’t be filmed and people are so paranoid about photography and filming taking place in public areas. Also there’s a grey area with regard to whether a licence from the local council is required for using actors under 16 in fi...

Re: The shorcomings of a film
In response to a comment made by Tim earlier, the director whose name you couldn’t remember who doesn’t like to rehearse is probably William Friedkin. In the excellent documentary “Friedkin Uncut”, he says, “Rehearsal is for sissies. What I’m after is spontaneity.” I’m of the same opinion and keep r...

Re: Filming a Play
I recently filmed a 40 minute one-act play called ‘The Morality of Lying’ written by someone I know personally, Gary Cattell. We made the decision that it would not be acted on a stage but in an actual house, and would be made as a proper film and not just a record of a stage play. Filming was done ...

Re: DVD and Blu-ray discs
I’m glad that there’s a consensus of opinion about discs. Part of my enjoyment of making films is designing the Case covers and the ‘labels’ to print straight onto the discs. Also discs encourage people to watch films on a proper screen rather than on their smart phones. Recently I felt offended and...

DVD and Blu-ray discs
It’s a shame that this forum has fallen into disuse recently. I check most days to see if anyone has posted anything new but there’s been nothing since last month so I’ve thought of a new topic to raise. I’m a big fan of Blu-ray discs. While I obviously stream films from Netflix, Amazon Prime etc., ...

Re: BIAFF 2022
I haven’t planned yet what to do about other meals, Tim. (And I might end up paying for the two Premier breakfasts.) We’d better wait and see what is on the BIAFF booking form (which will be issued with the next FVM) as for all we know some other other meals may be mentioned as being bookable. I rem...

Re: BIAFF 2022
I don’t think Mike Whyman will mind (as it’s surely not ‘secret’ information) if I reveal that I asked him about the format for BIAFF 2022 and it was he who told me. At BIAFF 2019 the hotel where BIAFF was based was the Hilton Garden hotel. I wasn’t overly impressed with the food and I remember that...

Re: BIAFF 2022
I have to confess that I’m a little disappointed that it’s the Crescent Theatre Studio rather than the main auditorium. I haven’t been to the Crescent Studio before and I hope it’s bigger than it sounds. What’s the seating capacity, Dave?

Re: BIAFF 2022
By the way, I’ve gone for an inexpensive option regarding the hotel but if I were well off I’d have gone for either the Hilton Garden Hotel (where BIAFF 2019 was held on the Friday and Saturday) or even better the Novotel where the Gala Dinner is being held. Both of these are very close to The Cresc...

BIAFF 2022
As there’s been nothing happening on the forum recently let’s talk about BIAFF 2022. Firstly I think it’s brilliant that IAC members are able to submit films free of charge up to 20th December. Secondly I like what I’ve heard about the arrangements for the actual event in Birmingham. I understand th...

Re: UK FILM REVIEWS
In response to Geoff (Fraught) yes there are certain actors who I use again and again because they are reliable and because they deliver the performances I’m looking for. But also I’m constantly looking for and using new actors, new talent. For my next film ‘The Morality of Lying’ there’s a cast of ...

Re: UK FILM REVIEWS
OK, Tom has brought us back to how this thread started, ie. my Russian film. It was the first cut of it, entitled AVOIDANCE, that received a 3 star BIAFF award and it was this version of the film that received the comment about the problem of subtitles taking one's eyes off the action on screen. Hav...
