Re: BIAFF Results 2022
Howard, I simply can't believe what I just read in your last post. When you submit a work, be it a painting, poem, piece of music or a film, to a panel of judges, you can't possibly complain when they don't rate it for a top prize. You may well disagree with them privately, but rather like a batsman...

Re: BIAFF Results 2022
Yes, but Dave, it is true that the Forum is hardly used. There is a big membership of the IAC and I'm amazed that they don't talk to each other. There is a small group (unconnected to the IAC), who communicate between themselves, of which I am a member, but where is the wider IAC membership. Perhaps...

Re: BIAFF Results 2022
No Howard, that is not the right way to think. In 1970 something I won a top thing (it was called International in those days) and didn't win another until around 2008, there is no peak, just an ongoing creative process. Enjoy it, that's what it's all about.

Re: BIAFF Results 2022
I mentioned before Howard, don't get too worked up, film judging is very subjective. Over the years, my first IAC Festival (LAFF) was in 1973, I have very rarely disagreed with a judgement, either on my own, or on other other people's films. This year my scores are 444, what will be will be. We are ...

Re: BIAFF Results 2022
Ah Howard, that's true! I can tell you that not even a Triple Diamond works wonders when you get old, things start to hurt, you'll see.

Re: BIAFF Results 2022
I'm not with Howard on this, I'm never (hardly ever, HMS Pinafore?)) surprised by my results so no anxiety whatsoever. Dave, cruel comments are all part of the aspect of art, we have to accept them, the same as we accept praise when forthcoming. Judges surely can write honestly and openly, otherwise...

Well, I achieved my aim, to wind young Howard up! Not too successfully though I admit.

Re: UNICA
Well said Ned, film makers are a worldwide breed, no matter how much they spend or earn in the process. Another tooth grinding word is "hobbyist". To many of us, the making of films is a life consuming passion, the word hobby is generally taken to mean an activity undertaken by way of recr...

Re: UNICA
As always, Dave has it spot on. The reason for entering the more open Festivals, has to be our desire to compare our work with films other than the IAC and Club output. As to judges comments, these are not often available, but having a wider audience certainly is, although the Covid restrictions hav...

Re: UNICA
I think that there is too much talk about the size of budgets for film making. I don't think that it really helps all that much when there is money spent on a production. Obviously a James Bond film needs an enormous budget for all the travel, stunts and stars, but the documentary and short film gen...

Re: Film & Video Maker Magazine - Back Issues
Howard, I did have the whole lot, uninterrupted from about 1963 up to the demise of the magazine. I think that I have somewhere issues concerning my Ten Best successes and a few articles but otherwise all slung, at my age one starts to prepare for one's own demise!

Re: BIAFF 2022
This whole matter just has to be addressed with a sense of proportion. Of course you can die of Covid, as you can of many other ailments, and Covid, is spread incredibly easily. As Richard says, risks have to be assessed, but I do believe that the risks with Covid are fairly remote and decreasing as...

Re: BIAFF 2022
I'd completely forgotten that I did book a hotel for BIAFF and I've just found the confirmation. I'm at the Novotel for the two nights in a standard room with "a double bed with convertible sofa", whatever that might entail. So there is room for a pretty local girl if I could find one, alt...
