Re: Fluctuating exposure
Peter, you say you don't feel comfortable with the 16:9 aspect ratio. Surely by now you will be well used to seeing most TV pictures in this aspect and cinemas ceased projecting the old 'academy' aspect in the late 50's. Personally I find it so much more satisfying composing for 16:9 as against 4:3 ...

Re: overscan - thank goodness it's behind us
Another problem Tom is you don't know how people have their TV's set up. I see so many with the aspects all over the place and when I mention it I get a comment like "Oh, I don't know about all that". The modern TV's have so many options available that it can be confusing and to make thing...

Re: The camera that changed the world
This is a very topical thread for me at the moment. I'm solely occupied in documentary film making and increasingly, I find that the classic set up with camera firmly on a tripod, is becoming less and less practical if I'm to capture the action. In my latest film which is doing the rounds I have to ...

Re: New laptops-no firewire- how to transfer HDV footage?
Col, there is no 'right' or 'wrong' but I do seem to have attracted much violence in my support of the Mac computer. Firstly, the MacPro multiple core computer with the latest Intel chips is lightning fast, and most importantly for me, will run software that PC's can't run, notably the BitVice DVD e...

Re: New laptops-no firewire- how to transfer HDV footage?
My MacBook has 2 firewire inputs and at least 2 USB as well as a card slot. Macs of all types are the computer of choice for editors in my humble opinion.

Re: Computer Monitor
You technical chaps seem to have covered every eventuality so I'll not venture there save to repeat to Jill that it is almost impossible to judge the final output from an edit on a computer screen. Once you have solved your sickness (you have my sympathy) think about a proper stand alone monitor. It...

Re: Computer Monitor
Although Jill is obviously talking about the monitor that she is using to display her editing interface there is also the matter of a decent standard monitor for checking the actual output picture for colour grading etc. As a matter of interest Jill do you have a separate monitor for this alongside ...

Re: Fnal Cut - goodnight?
Ned, we've already discussed this privately but I'd remind you that in my opinion (and in many editor's opinion on your side of the Atlantic), Media 100 is well worth re considering. I have used it for over fourteen years since I switched from 16mm film editing and it has been fantastic for me. It h...

Re: Have travel movies ever won festivals ?
Willy,it's not the genre that makes a good film but the treatment within that genre. Some travel films can be terrific but there has to be more than "This is the island of somewhere, the mountains are 50 million years old and farming is the main occupation....." You know what I mean. We ha...

Re: Mini DV tape - the era's end?
I too have now got used to a 'tapeless' workflow but I can't agree that it's faster. Indeed I have to conduct an additional stage, that of downloading my media files from camera (Sony S X S cards) to two separate drives. This takes about 15 minutes per 16 GB card. Then of course, when I start editin...

Re: AMPS 2011
If we're talking about AMPS, I do like it (won it once so I'm bound to!!) but I have one big moan, they have a limit of 30 minutes running time. Now I know people grumble about 'long' films, but it does depend on the quality of the film doesn't it? I've seen 10 minute documentaries that bored me sil...

Re: How might BIAFF entries be judged?
The thread, when read from start to finish is illuminating. There does seem to be general dissatisfaction with the judging process currently used by the IAC for BIAFF. It is tempting to think that there are feelings of disgruntlement amongst entrants who think that their film should have received a ...

Re: "muting" HDMI signals
As one who has, in past years, been honoured by an invitation to present films at Staines, I can vouch for their professionalism with regard to presentation. I can't see them being satisfied with 'sliding a box' in front of the lens but they certainly have highlighted a problem. There must be a 'tec...

Re: Test Screening
When I give shows and talks about film making one of the main points I make is the one that Fraught highlights. I can never understand people who insist on not showing their film to anyone until it's done and dusted - and when it's too late to change anything! I always print a rough cut and show it ...
