Re: DVD and Blu-ray discs

I have quite a bit to say on this subject, so will return later. But just to briefly say this time that well done to Howard for raising this important subject. I am in total agreement with Howard and also this time with Michael too as discs shouldn`t be abandoned/ destroyed and I have no intention o...

Re: What constitutes an amateur film?

Clearly some refining of the rules is now called for. As Tom mentioned at the start of this thread, a couple of films (or 3) had very dubious credentials as being of "amateur" status. On one of the Saturday BIAFF judging panels which I was on, we had a 101 minute Indian film called "D...

Re: How do you learn to make better films?

Jill asked about how we learn to make better films? This is a massive subject and as I wrote in the previous FVM and will also continue in the one due shortly, I learned mostly by "doing". At the start, this was the only way to do it as we lived in a very quiet part of a quiet town in York...

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

Just something to say here. It is often mentioned that BIAFF is one of the few and perhaps ONLY competition where written comments are given. I have to say that I have judged at many competitions over the years from small local club ones, to inter-club competitions to regional ones and even national...

Re: What constitutes an amateur film?

To answer my surrogate father Michael on his question about the football score...Well I am no great sports fan and this was a metaphor to illustrate my point about equality in " amateur film" competitions, but I am interested in mathematics and will try to calculate the answer. I would gue...

Re: What constitutes an amateur film?

Just to add my two pennyworth here... I was on a judging panel at the online BIAFF judging this year and on the Saturday, we had a 100 minute film. A bit unusual for the length of most amateur films, but not unique. The film had high productions values, well acted, nicely shot, great sound and so on...

Re: Sad news: RIP JOHN ASTIN

This is very sad news! We knew John quite well and chatted with him at many BIAFF festivals. We often joked and I pulled his leg telling him his voice on commentaries made him sound like Baldrick from Black Adder which he always laughed at. He made some great documentaries over the years which were ...

Re: BIAFF 2021 - should we even hope?

Just to follow on from my comments about withdrawing my comedy film from this year`s competition and Tim`s questions/ comments. To return to what I said on the forum under the heading about the sad loss of Reg Lancaster. Reg was a judge ( I think a final round judge) at the IAC festival in the year ...

Re: BIAFF 2021 - should we even hope?

As it appears now that BIAFF this year will once more be online, I messaged David Newman to ask that my 2020 film be withdrawn this year with the intention of entering it in 2022 (all being well). As a comedy, it does need an audience and will not play well online, even assuming that it works at all...

Re: The Magazine

There has been a lot of interesting comments here on this thread. Thanks to those who have said they enjoy my articles. It`s always nice to hear some positive feedback. Tim makes some good comments as others have done too. I agree with lots of points made. On a personal note, I have tried to vary th...

Re: The Magazine

Well here we are once again! Bitter disputes and back biting. It`s good that Willy accepts Paula Webster`s vicious attack on him. I would not be so forgiving. But the cover of the magazine with Willy`s photo on it was fine with me. It showed he was heavily featured inside, so why shouldn't he be on ...

Re: The Magazine

You are a very experienced and respected film maker Michael, so I can forgive you anything. I enjoy our little chats at BIAFF events and I hope you are asked for your own contribution of an autobiography for a future issue of FVM. On other content within the latest FVM magazine: I really must raise ...

Re: The Magazine

Well Michael, thanks for your kind words! And I thought you loved and admired me? But of course, I have always by far preferred being behind the camera rather than in front of it, but Mike Whyman insisted that I had to be on the cover as part of his series of profiles of contributors. I sent him a f...

Re: BIAFF 2021 - should we even hope?

For what it`s worth, I would go along with everyone here. So far, my only experience of Zoom (etc) has been taking the dogs to the vet and having a remote consultation from the car park to the surgery. This has not been totally successful with poor connections. It doesn`t always remain glitch free f...

Re: Sad news: RIP Reg Lancaster

Very sad news about Reg. We knew him from many IAC movie festivals and sat with him and Annabelle at several gala dinners as he told us many anecdotes from his past. One of my memorable moments with him was the year we had our comedy "Dropping Off" in the competition for "Movie xx&quo...
