Aaaargh! What did I unleash on the world?!?!?! Actually this illustrates the positive side of judging, when something you say or write helps or inspires a film maker. The negative and terrifying fear is that something you say or write may put people off making movies. Funnily enough I spotted that ...

Future BIAFFs - what (if anything) needs change?

People have been very complimentary about BIAFF 2007 and have rightly noted various things which worked well. Now let us turn our thoughts to the future. BIAFF 2008 will be in Harrogate BIAFF 2009 will be in Chesterfield We have already had the suggestion that the Isle of White would be a possible v...

One of your tracks was used at BIAFF 2007

Just to prove that not only do I read all the postings - I even pay attention to them ... The promo for UNICA 2007 which was screened at BIAFF during the Sunday awards show featured Bob's track "Superstrada". And yes I bought it and downloaded it and other tracks from his website. Thanks B...

These stories are already on the main website but bear repetition here I will confess to having dropped a realistic dummy from an 8th floor school window for one movie. We warned people in the classrooms below but did not consider the public in surrounding houses. BIG mistake. On another occasion ha...

I'd certainly go along with that list of films, Ned, and add - for example - 'The Stuntman' starring Peter O'Toole 'Kill Bill' (Tarantino) 'Crash' (Paul Haggis) 'The Butterfly Effect' & 'Donny Darko' for teenaged angst 'Being John Malkovich' 'Lola Runs' All the sort of films where I quickly felt...

Bless you, Roy, for some experience, thought and good sense. Most of the views expressed on the forum are moderate but elsewhere I hear some vitriolic comments about judges and judging. I find putting aside one's own tastes so far as possible is very hard to do. It's not just saying "I don't li...

Publicity can help a club to get new members, but that depends on the enthusiasm of the club membership, a one man band cannot resolve all the ails of a diminishing and aging membership. When a club gets below a critical point - maybe due to the lack of numbers/ filmmakers in the club then it may b...

PUBLICITY

You'd think as movie makers we would be good at communication ... but ... How many clubs have a publicity officer who actively seeks coverage in the local newspaper, on local radio and tv, who contacts other organisations, schools and official bodies when there is something vaguely relevant to their...

Hi Terry I'd just been looking at the YouTube material before popping on here ... great stuff. I know Westcliff do a lot of mock adverts and so on which might go down very well ... When can we hope for another longer work of fiction from you? Your documentaries about the Hope school for disadvantage...

Need to find out how though.
If I can do it, you certainly can, Billy.

One tip: Windows Moviemaker which comes free with Windows XP and probably Windows Vista offers an easy way to cut your work down to a size and quality suitable for the web.

Yes, passing any digital signal through an S-Video socket will degrade it slightly. If you run that signal into a digital recorder of some kind the finished result will be a slightly-degraded-digital-copy. But the issue earlier in the thread was about copying DVD films onto MiniDV tape for use in aw...

I asked a friend who makes a lot of videos of bands and his reply was: Good quality video, film or photography is simply not possible in low light. It is, however, possible to shoot in a well lit environment and make it appear that it was shot :- 1) In a dimly lit jazz club 2) At night 3) In a coal ...

A judge is not worthy of their post unless they are open minded to assess and reward: • the skill for the camera craft, • quality of the soundtrack, • creativeness, flow and structure of the edit, • a package that sparkles for viewing value. Reward must only go to craftsmanship, technique, art, cre...

Michael - thanks for the detailed notes on making perfect DVDs on a Mac system. Can anyone give similarly detailed notes for PC systems with program names and settings? It would be very much welcomed. Who suggested that copies of DVD's are degraded? Not so, they are identical and I use Titanium Toas...
