Re: THE BIAFF WEEKEND
When you see a "short" with lots of laurels on the thumbnail it gives the feeling that the makers are serious about their efforts. Ofcourse part of their crowdfunding budget has been for entering their film at festivals, I think some of the entry fees can be quite high. It actually puts m...

Re: THE BIAFF WEEKEND
Geof, welcome to the forum. good to have you aboard. I'm finding judging with subtitles is becoming easier with practice. At home Wwe watch a lot of foreign series on Netflix and these often come with a choice of subtitles or dubbed English. We do dip our toes in the "dubbed version" water...

Re: Nostalgia
You may well be right, John. That would be both a good thing, in that people with shared specialised interests could gather & share, but also a bad thing in that specialisation as both makers and viewers could reduce the variety of films people watch, or are tempted to have a go at making. I thi...

Re: Horror Adrenaline Rush
but I might find it fun making a spoof horror film with lots of jumps scares and creepy music. It would be getting a long way from holiday films and kittens on the lawn. You seem to forget, John, that many, if not most, teen horror films (and mainstream stuff is mainly aimed at teens/starring a tee...

Re: The Interviews - discuss
Thanks Ned.
How about the various versions of Last Lines? Very powerful films and of all the films in the festival these were the ones that grabbed me the most (possibly because I have been aligned to that point of view since the age of 16)

Re: What constitutes an amateur film?
The choice is between the "amateur" film with professionals defined and specifically excluded or the "non-commercial" film where unpaid professionals are included. I don't agree with those definitions at all, Ned. I have never suggested unpaid professionals shoud be excluded. My...

Re: What constitutes an amateur film?
I can understand the feelings of a lot of amateurs as they see the awards in their Amateur Festivals go to people who are in fact professional film makers. The definition of amateur in relation to BIAFF has shifted to relating to the film rather than its makers. Has that shifted? I wan't aware. Tha...

Re: About Death (Sobre la Muerte)
Or is it only "profit making" if the income exceeds the cost of the production? As someone with a further education qualification in Business and Finance, including a module on economics, I speak with some authority when I say "Yes"   Jill is, of course, right - ...

Re: About Death (Sobre la Muerte)
Here's a third person in favour of an Howard's declaration. Having said that, I doubt many people who submit online to festivals even bother to read the rules on the basis that if they are questioned they will withdraw. a £20 entry fee is not a big deal for a film with a $50,000 budget. However, eve...

Re: What constitutes an amateur film?
I agree entirely that we must be careful about how we limit films, but money is not just about equipment. It is about access to locations, props, costumes and ... actors. Interestingly the BIAFF rules seem to me to be only interested in a couple of things: 1. The film is not made for commercial gain...

Re: THE BIAFF WEEKEND
it would add considerable prestige to our festival if we could pay a professional film critic such as Mark Kermode to watch all the 5 star films and select the Diamond Award winners and the top two award winners... Agree, but don't forget tha BIAFF is heavily subsidised, so it's not necessarily a s...

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS
Tim says: “Good point made by Howard about the number of diamonds being fixed.” I wasn’t actually making any point about the fixed number of Diamonds. I totally approve of giving Diamond Awards to the “top 8 films of the whole festival” regardless of how many entries there are. I didn't think you w...

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS
Good point made by Howard about the number of diamonds being fixed. This means 30 films were 5 star (with 8 being upgraded to diamonds) last year and 17 this year. Or 17/168 = 10.12% and 30/288 = 10.42% So basically pretty much the same proportion of films were five star. In the words of Capt. Mainw...
