Ian - I think this may be the first time you have written positively about your club on the forum !

In private messages you have mentioned good and bad points about your club, but in public we tend to see the gripes more than the grins. Good on you for telling it like it is.

Cheers

I have had films much applauded by the audiance. only to be condemned by a judge as being to long. Result, No more competition entries from this film maker. NEVER let a judge's remarks do that to you! I speak as a frequent judge at all sorts of competitions. Judges only give you their view. If the ...

I am pretty sure you are right, Michael. Your AV maker wants to know the video image dimensions (720x576) in PAL if the material is in the usual 4x3 Academy ratio. Many AV workers use 1440x1080 which gives a high-resolution image but unless you plan to use the DVD on hi-def systems that is no use to...

Some European film festivals have special awards for titles and title-sequences - usually referred to as "generik". I first came across that at the late lamented De Drake Fiction Film Festival in Belgium, organised by Christiane Surdiacourt. I have long wanted an award for the best movie p...

In Britain some of the deals on music say you must not list the music played in the credits. This is usually the case if the artist is identifiable. I guess they do not want people calling their movies "A David Bowie film" or whatever. In Australia it used to be the other way round: they h...

TIME PASSING

Maybe it is the change of year ... but I found myself this morning wondering how we can communicate to others the sense of time passing. I have two particular scenarios in mind: 1) In a club you want to demonstrate or have a workshop on some issue like script development, analysing footage before ed...

Think twice

Hi Richard Welcome to the forum. I cannot answer the specific points you raise - but can offer a two words on upgrading: think twice. Yes, you can breathe new life into a computer with extra memory etc but ... a) hard discs die - with an average life of a bit over 5 years. b) electronic chips deteri...

Family Chronicles

In parts of Europe there is a recognised category of films known as "family chronicles". These are the sort of films Pathe, Kodak et al had in mind when they developed the home cinema market ... moving picture records of family occasions: holidays, weddings, parties and get-togethers. I'll...

When IAC established its fellowship FIAC was "taken".

It stands for Foundries Industry Advisory Committee.
or oddly
Fellow of the Institute of Company Accountants

So FACI was free and this, I guess, stands for Fellow of the Amateur Cinematographers Institutute.

I sometimes find the DVD extras helpful and occasionally the director's commentary. A good set of extra featurettes can shed light on how a film was made and explain some the decisions behind shots. A good commentary does an even better job. Peter Jackson's commentaries on "Lord of the Rings&qu...

Canon XM2 problem - any ideas?

Someone tried to post this message but had not registered for the forum, so their message appeared in the "failed applications" list along with all the spam. I could not find their name, but since it sounds like a genuine question - and they can read the threads without being registered - ...

The obvious choice is the Widescreen Centre. They offer the service but it should be more widely available because Super-8mm is still in use. Many students like it. http://www.widescreen-centre.co.uk/Catalogue/Motion_picture_division.html You and Linda go to so many festivals this could have happene...

Hi Guys Sorry I have been away or I'd have answered this sooner. The IAC copyright licence deals are only for normal amateur (sorry!) film use in homes, clubs and occasional festivals. If you want to use "production music" - the special CDs you can buy only through IAC or use discs bought ...
