Re: What baffled you when you began filming?

It wasn't bafflement, but sound was always difficult on film. No excuse now for losing the sound on the original. People still find it difficult, apparently. I think the rule should be to give priority to the voice. Other live sound or music can be at much lower volume and still be audible. Keep voi...

Optimum Length

I can't imagine what an audience would say if they went to an amateur theatrical production that ended after 20 minutes, never mind ten! So it must be the script or the subject, I suppose.

Cotswold Film Competition is no more

How sad. The Cotswold, whenever I entered, gave the opinions of more judges than any other which, I thought, made it of even more value than any other that I was aware of.
Thank you, Lee.

2008 festival results

Thanks, Dave; as I hadn't looked at the Cotswold results I was a bit amazed at the rating for 'Dalle de Verre'. The Guernsey result was also our best ever. These WERE slightly different from the BIAFF entry in the matter of the cutting of an interview which you may remember was the subject of my pos...

Quote "How do we view a Video8 movie now the camera is broken and lying in the corner? " Send it to me and with my pro Hi8 editing deck which plays video 8 I'll convert it to DVD in a similar way that I convert 9mm, standard 8, super 8 and 16mm film on ancient projectors. Look after your o...

How Hi is Hi Def?

Thanks for both replies. I am a dunce as far as these things go, and I'm not sure I understand but I have a friend who will. His Premiere 6.5 imports stills of the quality I wanted and it remains to be seen if he can work out why mine won't. As for the first part of my question it appears from what ...

How Hi is Hi Def?

Back in the winter I took video, using a tripod, on our PD 170 (4:3!) of a foggy view of a tree in a big RHS garden. My wife took the same shot, hand held on our Panasonic DMC FZ50 still camera. It has a 10 megapixel chip, I think. Her picture shows twigs and branches, mine branches only. Would HiDe...

Re: BIAFF at Harrogate

Thanks, Ian, but I still don't understand HOW - Quote:- As lenses are circular I don't understand how at a given focal length there can be more width ( without less height. ) Sorry, this should have read 'without more height! Do these cameras somhow use all the lens or not? Don't make it too complic...

BIAFF at Harrogate

D & I enjoyed the film show on the Sunday. Having read the preceding remarks I still don't understand what the problem was but it didn't spoil it for us. In my very limited experience something should always go wrong, otherwise it's not natural! 'Life is just one damned thing after another' isn'...

Are you happy..........?

I'm interested in the comments about the synopsis. We are usually asked to supply one and I gather the judges see it but the audience often doesn't, perhaps to save printing/paper. My wife and I never go to the cinema and only see films on TV so we always have some sort of synopsis so know what we a...

Cutting interviews

You flatter me, Dave. My trouble may be lack of imagination. Ian has it right; I wouldn't have thought of adding things that weren't there! I'll think hard about this, but may reedit with cuts instead of dissolves; I probably should have tried this before writing in. I have done this once in one int...

Cutting interviews

Thanks Ian and Billy. I know how I should have done the original but can't redo it; he died some years back. Perhaps I'll investigate Youtube sometime, but I really need comments about which way of avoiding jump cuts works best with the material I have, tho' I realise you'd be able to give better ad...

BIAFF - the results

Good for you, Fraught, for inviting comments. I didn't bother about the name of the guest house, perhaps I missed a bit of the commentary that was relevant that made the judges comment on this, but what I found weak was the marvelous still shots led us to believe we were going to see stunning scener...

Cutting interviews

In a film submitted to BIAFF 2008 I am, like the judges!!, not quite satisfied with the way I cut an interview which was too long for 'a general audience' tho' we found it all interesting. It had to be cut in ,perhaps, eight places so 1. I used it as voiceover 2. Used Zoom on Premier 3. Used a quick ...
