Re: Silver discs
Many thanks, Michael and Ned, for your helpful replies. I am sad to learn of the potentially short life of projects which have been burned to DVD disc. Two years ago, having been told that my family films on VHS tape would eventually deteriorate to the point where they would be unplayable, I took th...

Re: Silver discs
Thanks, Billy.
But forgive my ignorance - what are "silver disc"?
Are they the commercially available DVDs used for burning video projects (or other DVDs) to DVD?
I use Verbatim DVD+R discs.

Silver discs
This is a question for Tom Hardwick.
Tom, in your excellent article in the February 2010 issue of F & VM you write "Home burnt silver discs worry me slightly as many of my early ones are unplayable now."
Could you please explain further what you mean by this?
Thanks.

Re: Canon Legria HV40 camcorder
As ever, Tom, I am very grateful for your insights and information.
Once my new HV40 arrives next week, I'll be trying all things you - and others - have suggested over the past week.
Roll on next week!

Re: Canon Legria HV40 camcorder
The link you've given me, Tom, for Raynox is a boon and I'll certainly be referring to it again when my new MV40 arrives early next week. (The samples given on the site are for HV30; there is no sample for HV40.) What sort of prices are we talking about for these telephoto and w/a lenses? (Or is tha...

Re: Canon Legria HV40 camcorder
Thanks Billy, Tom and Dave. I must admit that, as enthusiastic as I am about videography, I am not the most technically minded or mentally adept of people when it comes to all these figures and calculations and ratios associated with zoom lenses and wide-angle lenses and lenses in general. My old Ca...

Re: Canon Legria HV40 camcorder
Thanks, Ned and Tom, for your added valuable insights. I ordered the HV40 today. It will be used in tandem with my Canon XL2. Re the HV40's x10 zoom. I'm slightly unhappy with this. Are there converters available to increase it to, say, around x20? And is a dedicated HV40 wide-angle lens available? ...

Re: Canon Legria HV40 camcorder
Thanks again, Billy and Chris. I haven't yet bought the MV40 - I'll be ding this online tomorrow - but I do agree with the notion that it is preferable to record in SD in the first place because it will be compatible with the various other things I do in SD. I'll take a look at the Canon link, Chris...

Re: Canon Legria HV40 camcorder
Thanks for the info about the wide-angle issue with the HV40. I had read about this problem and I was wondering how it might be overcome. I'd be lost without a good w/a option. (I've been spoiled by the XL2's amazing w/a lens!) But I am still curious to know if the camera can record in both HD and S...

Re: Canon Legria HV40 camcorder
Thanks, Chris, it's good to know that someone else is in exactly the same position as I intend to be when I buy the HV40. I am really pleased to hear the XL2 and the HV40 match each other perfectly in SD mode. Q: Does the HV40 provide an option to record in either HD or SD? I'm a bit confused becaus...

Re: Canon Legria HV40 camcorder
One further query for Arthur and/or Billy. The official Canon site for the HV40 states: 1. Camcorder Sensor Resolution: 2.96 Mpix 2. Camcorder Effective Video Resolution: 2.07 Mpix Can anyone tell me, accurately or by a guesstimate, what 1. and 2. translate to when an HD recording is downloaded in S...

Re: Canon Legria HV40 camcorder
Many thanks, Arthur, for your helpful reply. I had assumed you have the choice to record in either HD or SD; I didn't realise that the HV40 records in HD and then you have the option to download in either HD or SD. Very useful facility indeed. Thanks also, Billy. I Just mentioned in passing that, am...

Canon Legria HV40 camcorder
Does anyone own a Canon Legria HV40? If so, can they please confirm that it records in both HD and SD mode? I have Canon XL2 and I edit the MiniDV tapes via a PC and until I can afford to upgrade to a faster, more expensive computer for HD editing, I need to continue filming in SD to be able to use ...
