Re: Editing HD
I am a great fan of Media 100. I edited on it ever since I moved from film 11 years ago and with the latest versions shoot XDCAM 1920 X 1080i and edit in HD, you can though ingest HDV through firewire. Media 100 (now owned and developed by Boris) is the most intuitive of all edit systems and is far ...

Re: 2010 INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION RESULTS
Tom, we'll certainly know you, the man carrying two cameras, spare mic, two tripods and still looking calm and collected!

Re: 2010 INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION RESULTS
Alright, here's a reaction. Not terribly surprised at a poor result personally a 4, but that's all I judged it and I've never been wrong in 40 years! I'm looking forward to seeing the best ones though. As for Alice in Wonderland 3D, I saw that and although the film is good the 3D is, in my opinion, ...

Re: Rewinding tapes
Ian, sorry if I caused any confusion by calling a deck a deck but that's what they are, like an old tape recorder but for video tape rather than audio tape - no great technological mystery. I'm as amateur as you and have visited countless clubs within the IAC umbrella where they play their films thr...

Re: Rewinding tapes
I must say I've never seen a decent edit suite without at least one deck in it but there you go. How else to make copies from a master tape long after the timeline has been wiped from the computer? As for taking everything in as shot, what a waste of time and as I had shot 35 hours of HD for a recen...

Re: Rewinding tapes
I have to say that I am constantly amazed that serious film makers can produce without the use of a deck. If you're recording to tape you have to review the footage, possibly many times, decide what to take in for the edit and then play it to acquire. Do people do all this using the camera, not to m...

Re: TO STORYBOARD OR NOT ...
Odd about this thread,it seems to have been running for ages judging by the dates, Dave, have you revived it seeking contentious comments? I HATE storyboarding! It is of course essential for a billion dollar feature film in order for complex plans to be made and to avoid multi million dollar costs o...

Basic Photographic Skills & Principles.
This may not be the right forum for this but the 'Newcomer's' one doesn't seem to be much frequented. I am constantly amazed at some of the posts to one of the professional forums on the Creative Cow (great by the way). People are asking questions indicating a astounding lack of the basic skills of ...

Re: Blu-ray burner and suitable BD-re discs
Roy, one of the best DVD brands is Verbatim which I have used for year following advice from Tom Hardwick. I am just starting with Blu-Ray and am using Verbatim's BD-R 25Gb discs which I'm sure will prove as good as their SD counterpart. Of course Blu-Ray players will play to a TV provided you can c...

Re: HD editing - Simple things to know?
Geoff, I know all about the Matrox Max, and I had a long talk with them last week at the Production Show. My people at NMR don't reckon on them at all as they've had a lot of drive failures with their kit. The only advantage with the Max is the speed. The quality is the same as Compressor and H264 a...

Re: HD editing - Simple things to know?
As I'm now shooting and editing in full 1920 X 1080 HD I suppose I should exhibit the films in HD which means Blu-Ray discs presumably. Although the better Blu-Ray players upscale SD DVD's very well it seems silly not to take advantage of the full HD quality. I am now embarking on a suite upgrade an...

Re: HD editing - Simple things to know?
I have sympathy with your key board problem, one of the worst things about using foreign hotel computers is the time it takes to work it all out. On the HD question, there isn't any difference editing HD from any other codec. I have been doing it for years now. Of course your edit software has to be...

Oh Tom, I forgot to say that there is software now available which can negate the effect of 'flash banding', did you know?

Re: BVE at Earl's Court
I too went to the show at Earls Court today, Wednesday but have to disagree with Tom. I found it fascinating as ever and just as relevant to what I do. I saw many people who supply various pieces of kit to me over the years and my editing system supliers also and it always helps to see them to catch...
