I suppose most clubs have holiday competitions because it is generally on holiday when members (at least those who work)have the time to actually make a film. In the early days of the hobby foreign travel would be a bit of a novelty but nowadays so many people have visited so many places that it is ...

Film Festival

I was having a look at the web-site for the BBC Film Festival which is being held in Glasgow on 9th Sept. and was intrigued by the picture of the presenter as it looks to me as if he is posing with a Super 8 camera. It looks like it could be a Canon but I might be wrong - what do you all think? http...

Just on the autograph theme I wouldn't classify myself as an authograph hunter per se but on some trips to Hollywood I have brought back some photos personally signed for me by Virginia Mayo, Stella Stevens, Debbie Reynolds, and Connie Hinds & Alan Young (stars of Mr Ed). Maybe I should do an ar...

I know that some people favour them but as someone who does a bit of judging I dislike scoring systems for different aspects of a movie and never use them as I think it makes the process too clinical. What weighting would you give to each element? Should technical aspects carry more marks than the a...

My main interests other than amateur movies are: photography, cinema, TV, reading (fiction/non fiction), gardening, theatre, writing, walking, audio visual, travel..... I suppose I've always been a bit of a one for hobbys etc and I've come to the conclusion that there would be a lot less stress in t...

In a way it is sad to see the passing of the bronze/silver/gold certificates but I think it was time for a change and I think that the star ratings will be an improvement. Now we shall all have to aspire to being "diamonds" - this sounds much better than "international"!

I've been able to make DVD's on my recorder and play on other machines without any difficulty using DVD-R. I gather that +R can be a problem.

My own experience is that my DVD's look better on my 32" LCD than on my old CRT.They are also excellent when projected. I make my copies by using a DVD recorder rather than burning them in the computer.

Delving into the depths of my memory I seem to recall seeing a competition many years ago where the rules stated that an amateur was deemed to be someone who did not earn more than 10% of their income from the hobby. I can't remember which competition it was, and it could have been for photographs.

I think one of the problems is that cinemas make quite a lot of money from the sale of pop corn, soft drinks, nachos, hot dogs etc (is this healthy eating?) so I don't suppose there is much chance of managers stopping people from taking it into the auditorium. At least around here the punters manage...

Sorry Ned, must have had a senior moment and mis read your comments re the goons etc. It's hard to understand why people pay good money to see a film and then spend much of the time eating or talking.

I guess I'm lucky in having access to some very well set up cinemas (including multiplexes) where picture, sound quality, comfort and cleanliness are generally of a high standard. I haven't experienced too many problems with noisy patrons but Glasgow folk tend to be keen and discerning cinemagoers. ...

I am a big admirer of both Steven Spielberg and George Lucas though perhaps for different reasons. I am a fan of Speilberg for his sheer film making skills, though I have to say I prefer his earlier work to some of his more recent movies, and Lucas for his pioneering technical work on the Star Wars ...
