Re: BIAFF 2022
Jan and I have got our hotel sorted for BIAFF. Thanks to a Swiss friend who had reserved for UNICA Birmingham in 2020. Between him and Jan and they were able to negotiate with the hotel for us to use it for the BIAFF weekend. I believe we will be meeting in the Crescent Theatre's Studio - its second...

Re: How do you "sell" a film festival?
I think the Canadian film Willy has in mind was Nothing Girl (Les Pieds Dans le Vide) by Pierre Daudelin.

Re: How do you "sell" a film festival?
BIAFF last year - which was admittedly an unusual one - had 50 submissions on Film Freeway.

Re: How do you "sell" a film festival?
Thanks, guys, this is fascinating ... but not quite the point I wanted. Much of what you suggest would boost the BIAFF and I hope that when Simon Sumner invited ideas a few months ago, you told him your thoughts. He is also a reader here sometimes ... When I wrote about "if you can't sell the s...

How do you "sell" a film festival?
I keep remembering an old advertising saying: "If you can't sell the sausage, sell the sizzle." Why? Because I see so many people around the world trying to promote film festivals. But beyond listing the dates (and often forgetting to give the closing date!) and general location ... they h...

Re: Paul Vernon
That is sad news, Ned.
Paul's enthusiasm for the Westerns and his dogged determination to make long-length films inspired many others. Both he and his films were much admired.

Re: UK FILM REVIEWS
Each to his own ... but I keep thinking of my old friend, Oskar Siebert, who made many award-winning films which were at BIAFF, Guernsey and Malta festivals among others. When a shoulder problem meant he could no longer hold his camera, he stopped making films. But it was the plots, the actors and t...

Geof (and Roy) I am sorry for the delay in approving the above message ... just age and stupidity on my part. I apologise.

Re: Jameela
I meant to comment before on this ... My view is that the BIAFF competition starts at the 5-star level. From those films the diamond and most of the major award-winners are chosen. Ratings 1-star to 5-star are really an assessment (however inexact) of the standard achieved. They can be viewed as IAC...

Re: Jameela
Just to touch on your second-last point ... "Kill your babies" is usually intended to mean you should remove shots you are proud of, or which mean a lot because they were difficult to get ... IF THEY DO NOT TELL YOUR STORY. I have never heard it used to mean abandon your themes or ideas.

Re: IN DEFENCE OF DISSOLVES
I'm with you, Howard! The only rule is "all things in moderation". Because dissolves and transitions became so much easier to achieve in video, the early video days suffered from overuse of visible transitions. You can see a similar overuse of drone shots in the past few years as that tech...

Re: THE BIAFF WEEKEND
Over the years I have often remarked that British non-commercial film makers rarely tackle matters of current controversy or even current interest much. This year's BIAFF did have some films about life in lockdown and about the pandemic. So maybe we are losing our stiff upper lippery a bit. In some ...

Re: About Death (Sobre la Muerte)
Harking back to John Simpson's point about having films available ... Some festivals require entries which have not been publicly online, so several film makers keep control and stop others using their work. On the IAC website we only post films, which their makers have placed on Vimeo, YouTube or t...
