Re: BIAFF RESULTS 2023
On the subject of people not turning up to collect their awards at BIAFF, this has always been a source of irritation to me. There may obviously be a genuine reason why a winner can’t make it, eg. a family issue or illness, but I often suspect it’s because they don’t value the award enough to be bot...

Re: BIAFF RESULTS 2023
We’ve been round the block a few times with all this and there’s no definitive solution in sight. Another suggestion has been to have films simply either “Officially Selected” or “Not Selected”. A potential problem with this would be controlling the number of selected films as there may be too many ...

Re: BIAFF RESULTS 2023
Michael, it was Dave who suggested that the lower stars are taken by some filmmakers as (almost) insulting and I was agreeing with him based on what others have told me. I personally haven’t felt insulted by 2 star awards, merely disappointed and maybe puzzled. I could name two filmmakers in the Mid...

Re: BIAFF RESULTS 2023
I’m glad you enjoyed ‘Scraggyneck’ Willy. Regarding Dave’s suggestion about reverting to Bronze Silver and Gold I think is well worth considering. Many people feel upset and disappointed, even insulted, by low star ratings and some to my knowledge have stopped entering BIAFF for this very reason. Th...

Re: BIAFF RESULTS 2023
Willy, I’ve now seen Milky Way. It’s an extraordinary film and I’ve never seen anything quite like it before. My opinion is, while I didn’t understand it and didn’t particularly like it, it shows Werner as a brilliant filmmaker in total command of his material. Technically it’s a really excellent pi...

Re: BIAFF RESULTS 2023
There are still a few good Film Festivals with live screenings in the UK in which I’ve had films shown on big screens including The Birmingham Film Festival (with a decent sized audience in November 2022), and The Wolverhampton Film Festival. As with you, Michael, I almost exclusively watch feature ...

Re: BIAFF RESULTS 2023
Yes John, 8 days, but the first 5 days are just online on Zoom. While it’s good to have extra films shown like this, as a filmmaker I want my films shown at the live event Saturday to Monday as for me that’s what BIAFF is all about, seeing your films on a big screen with a live audience. It’s nowher...

Re: BIAFF RESULTS 2023
Michael, it’s what I was told by a person who has been a judge in various short film competitions, regarding lone filmmakers such as myself being in competition with people making films in teams. I’d mentioned that I was bracing myself not to be given more than 4* again this year, like last year. He...

BIAFF RESULTS 2023
This is the month when we filmmakers get to receive our results and judges’ comments. I submitted nine films last year and the highest star rating I received was 4 stars (for six of my entries). This year I submitted ten films and I’ve already resigned myself to the very real possibility that once a...

Re: A Bunch of Amateurs
I personally make films principally for the love of making them, and stick to the kinds of films I enjoy watching myself. At the same time I bear in mind that, because I send them to BIAFF and other film festivals, they need to be as good as I can make them. To this end I ask one or two trusted peop...

Re: A Bunch of Amateurs
I’m glad to see that the forum is still being supported. A few points from me on this subject. Michael, one of the film festivals you mentioned is still going strong: The Golden Knight Malta International Short Film Festival. https://filmfreeway.com/GoldenKnightMaltainterntionalFilmFestival I submit...

Re: A Bunch of Amateurs
Thanks for telling us, Ken. I’m really looking forward to seeing it. Regarding Bradford Movie Makers’ ‘Oklahoma’ film, as featured in ‘A Bunch of Amateurs’, I was one of the first round BIAFF judges for it a couple of years ago!
