Re: Casablanca 2D Editor

I telephoned the Casablanca people for some tech support on this issue, and the way you can do it in Casablanca is to shell out for the pack containing the cine converter effect, which is obviously just a 2D DVE. To computer based editors it may seem like quite a lot of money for this particular pi...

I'm very confused by these answers. Maybe I'm just more senile than I thought. If projecting 16:9 on a 4:3 screen, to get the full picture there will have to be black top and bottom. Changing the picture size doesn't affect the composition, merely the size. Same way with a 4:3 pic on a 16:9 screen ...

[quote="Mike Shaw"]Not sure if that is an answer to my post Willy, but if so - no, there is no change to the composition except that black borders will appear either at the top/bottom, or the sides, depending on the original format and the final format being used. Good photography/composit...

Re: Are you square?

Moreover it would also change the composition of the images. That's also very important. In my opinion your alternative would not be excellent either. By " composition" I mean : I could have cut off the legs of the 50, 100 soldiers or more that are marching or part of their heads. Part of ...

Re: Are you square?

In the last few months I've become aware of an additional issue: mixed formats. One was a 16x9 film which incorporated a few archive scenes. The archive material was, of course, 4x3. But the film maker had not adapted it by adding black edges or trimming top and bottom. The archive material was squ...

Re: Passchendaele 90 Years Later

Flemish young man became Canadian soldier ! As I told you : there was a concert with slides and film (archive footage) in Passchendaele Church on Saturday night. It was the moving story of a young poor Belgian adventurer who emmigrated to Canada. He seemed to be very happy there. He was like all th...

Passchendaele 90 Years Later

Please, remember them ! What a weekend ! 10 and 11 November in Passchendaele ! Perhaps you already know that I am a member of the Volunteer Passchendaele Society. The president is a former Belgian navy officer. He's retired, but he's an archeologist now. He's already found the remains of British, A...

In none of these did major awards go to regular "big name" entrants like Michael Slowe, Ken Wilson, Willy Van der Linden, Urbain Appeltans, Alan Colegrave, Michael Gough, Circle Eight, Channel 7 ... No, Dave, you're right, and I enjoyed these festivals more than ever before. It means that...

What do you think about this ?

On this forum we have already talked about judiging films many times, but yesterday I had an interesting chat with a photographer and now I would like to know what my English friends think about the things he said. I talked to him at the interval of a Belgium-Holland Film festival organized by my cl...

Just an aside ... I make a point of seeing the time of each posting. It is fascinating how many night-owls there are among us! And now that Summer-Time is over the time on the forum matches the one on our clocks! Dave Church owls I live together with the barn owls. Do not forget that when I am writ...

Re: Justify or Help - Judges Comments

After having edited a part of my film I often ask my wife Vera what she thinks about it. Then she sometimes says : If I were you I would delete that sequence or I would make it much shorter. Then we have a discussion about it. When other friends tell me the same then I must always confess : my wife ...

commended", "highly commended" "commended" ... Gold, silver and bronze Percentages give the impression that you are in a school. Dave has already told us that BIAFF will use a "star"-system next year. I'm pleased with this. No gold, silver and bronze anymore. In my...

Re: Justify or Help - what should competition crits try to d

[quote="Dave Watterson"] Regardless of the festival or the film's rating, crits seem to me to fall into two main groups: a) those that only seek to justify or explain the rating the judge has given. These may be quite short and only touch on one or two points of detail. b) those that try t...

Perhaps you know that I was invited by the Scottish Association of Moviemakers last weekend. In Tunbridge Wells I already told friends that I will be reincarnated as a Brit. I forgot to tell them that I will be reincarnated as a Scotsman. Now I'm sure about it. Yes I can believe that after being th...

Here, here! I know at least one regular forum reader who says she prefers just to watch because it seems like an all-male club. I don't know who is behind all the pseudonyms so I cannot confirm her impression. If it is true then that is sad. We need different perspectives. There is no harm in just ...
