Re: Attracting New Members

Hi Frank (and may I add my welcome to you to the forum). As a 52 year old I'd be a youngster in most IAC affiliated clubs (though Chris & John beat me by many years) and I too get frustrated by the "old grey haired men" image and, more importantly, the reluctance among many members to ...

Re: What software do you use in your movie making?

Most of what I use has already been mentioned above, but I might add specific versions EDITING Sony Vegas Pro 12 Suite (which includes: Hit Film Ultimate 2 (not mentioned above) VASST Ultimate S (script collection for Vegas) Excalibur (script collection for Vegas) NewBlueFX - Motion Blends, Cartoone...

Re: Video Editing software

I'd say that this is primarily a compositing programme Delighted to have a second opinion which concurs with my own. It confirms that if I am mistaken, i'm not alone  Seriously, if it had been a competent editing programme, i cannot see how Sony would have bundled it in their Vegas Pro Suite. ...

Re: Video Editing software

Just one point about using HitFilm as an editor - it does seem rather limited in its export capabilities. It is not able to make use of all the codecs installed on your system - basically your choices are .H264 or uncompressed avi, so the chances are you will export in uncompressed format and use an...

Re: Video Editing software

The thing I would like to know more about with Hit Film is its motion tracking capability - how effective, how accurate and how smooth is it. Your examples of the use of motion tracking are to do with "repairing" video, but I know too well that you would use it far more creatively than th...

Ah but Col, l maintain that the first 10 seconds of Egg DO captivate you, do insist you don't flip channels. It may well be about boiling an egg but have you ever seen it shown in such a compelling way? Particularly as Bob employs a very clever device - naming the film "The Egg" yet showi...

Re: Video Editing software

I own it. I upgraded to the Vegas Pro Suite which included it when there was an offer on. I bought it for the compositing capabilities rather than straightforward editing as Vegas is more than capable in that area. Basically I bought it as a poor mans After Effects (although it's not necessarily &qu...

Re: Adobe software

Are Col and I just luddites? Not at all. But for Microsoft, its a necessary move. With virtual saturation of the market and little need to upgrade (what else could one add to Word/Excel etc to improve them?) it needs a revenue stream from somewhere. Adobe might not be quite as ubiquitous in Video a...

Re: 1 2 3 4 5 STARS BIAFF 2013

Yes - getting favourable comments back on a helpful critique is gratifying, and goes a long way to making it a worthwhile exercise. I've wondered that. Do you actually like follow ups? Not just favourable comments. I didn't understand a comment about one of my films in the Guernsey Lily once and ra...

Re: 1 2 3 4 5 STARS BIAFF 2013

Col with regard to foreign entries at BIAFF receiving proportionally more top awards than UK entries, my first reaction was that it was inevitable - but Dave had already posted the reason. By way of example I submit most things I make to NTR and only those I think worthy of 3* and above to BIAFF. I ...

Re: 1 2 3 4 5 STARS BIAFF 2013

I think it is sad we have to be in a competitive arena when it comes to our hobby But we don't. No-one is obliged to enter competitions . Oh, but you are if you want your film shown at festivals - with their larger-than-the-local-club audiences. :( I think the NTR festival has this right. All films...

Re: 1 2 3 4 5 STARS BIAFF 2013

This touches on a general problem with all marking/scoring systems: hardly anyone uses the full range of marks available. Too true. Many allocate all films somewhere between 40 and 45. I tend to give a low around 20, but why? Some strange idea that it is 40% better than a flim which is just a blank...

Re: 1 2 3 4 5 STARS BIAFF 2013

We (Staines) used to have a similar, though not identical, system to OVFM. Marks out of 10 each for visuals, sound, editing and out of 20 for "general". A few years later (funnily enough when I joined) we got rid of that, for three reasons: 1. Several members didn't feel knowledgeable enou...

Re: 1 2 3 4 5 STARS BIAFF 2013

I think the ratio "... 1.5 for technical quality, 3.5 for the appropriate use of technique and up to 6 for message/story" - (the way the story is told - the creativity?) - mentioned by Geoff is probably a reasonable one to consider when judging movies. I don't believe you can divorce &quo...
