Re: 1 2 3 4 5 STARS BIAFF 2013

I agree rules are meant to be broken. But breaking them has an effect on the viewer. As I see it we have expectations when we see a sequence. If those expectations are not met this can have one of two effects (possibly both at the same time). 1. It can disorientate the viewer or emphasise something ...

Re: 1 2 3 4 5 STARS BIAFF 2013

It is a conundrum. How to have a sensible debate, which requires examples we can all see, without naming the films -which were submitted by people for BIAFF judges to judge - not for us to comment on in open forum? As it happens I'm pretty certain I know to which film Lee is referring but I'm reluct...

BIAFF 2013 Films on line

Congratulations Dave & Jan on getting the links to so many BIAFF films up on line so quickly. Many thanks.
All I need is an uncomfortable chair and a queue for a cup of coffee and I can pretend I was there!

Re: using Pinnacle Studio 11.1

In the PC world the best editing software for AVCHD is Adobe Premiere CS6, Grass Valley Edius 6/6.5, Sony Vegas and Avid but all these are quite expensive and not necessarily in the best order, I use Premiere and/or Edius Although, in practice, you may find that Premiere Elements or Vegas Movie Stu...

Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS

To be specific, two movies by Bob Lorrimer, The Bear Behind and The Drill both won 4*, now if you just have a look at both of these and compare them to John's "Thinking Time", which got a diamond and how would you rate them. To me both of Bob's movies are at least as good as, if not bette...

Re: Image licensing

I wonder if the lack of credits for the use of other people's work stems from the rules of the IAC Music Copyright Scheme which forbids giving credits for music used under those licences. (My guess is that the music industry thought it better not to be seen to be connected to the use of the tracks ...

Re: Would you join a club?

"all rather bleak and depressing". ... why does this seem to equate with modern? ...even if some possible good may come in the end do we have to go through the mill first? ... I would argue, basically "yes". In order to have resolution, you need conflict. Even in a comparatively...

Re: Image licensing

PS It often amuses me that amateur film makers mark their own films with the copyright symbol and would get rightly upset if they found someone had used chunks from them in other movies ... yet have a casual attitude to their own bending of the rules. Bingo, Dave! Although rather than amuse me, it'...

I think you'll find that's 3. The original BMD Cineama Camera is 2.5K, the 4K and Micros Four-Thirds are both new.

Re: BIAFF

Suzie, if the comments were helpful, then it's been a worthwhile exercise. Actually even if they weren't, it's been a worthwhile exercise because you describe the films as "short and fun" from which I can only assume you had fun making them. We may get very serious from time to time, but w...

Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS

Surely the truth is we need both types of judges. People who know nothing about the mechanics of film best reflect most people in the world and therefore are, in my opinion, best placed to judge how effective the film is - what emotions it stirs, how informative it is, how entertaining it is. They a...

Re: Where is the NLE Forum?

Colin Jones must be in despair. How many times must he publish his box-out 'Joining the NLE Group' for you guys to get the message? Logically every issue shoud carry it. Afetr reading your comment, Tom, I thought I was being a bit dense so I looked really hard at the Feb 2013 issue. Nothing. So I p...

Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS

Indeed Geoff and his co-judge (David Moore - a retired head of sound at Sky TV) delivered some of the most useful, positive and detailed comments I've ever seen (other than on forums) be it at Staines, Region or BIAFF. They delivered them on the night and later in written form. I am very grateful an...

Re: NLE Forum

What a good question! I read about this mystical NLE forum in every issue of FVM and wonder what sort of secret initiation one needs to undergo in order to partake.
