Re: Using a HD camcorder makes you a better videographer

Peter, his name was Cooper, can't recall his first name. I met him several times as we used to win Ten Bests in the 1970's and were on TV together and the NFT - those were the days for non commercial film making! His films were fantastic, you're right, and with such pathos. But your point about the ...

Re: Using a HD camcorder makes you a better videographer

Tom, whatever you do get paid it ain't enough, you do a fabulous job, I'm only sorry that I can't get married again - not yet anyway! On the HD question, of course good pictures are important to a production and there's no question that HD is enabling us to produce pictures equal (or even superior) ...

Re: Blu-Ray Rather Than DVD

In case I'm thought of as a 'gadget' nut I hate the iphone (the screen's too sensitive), the Kindle, (what's wrong with a book?) and as for 3D, well it's the end of cinema (and TV) for me if it really catches on.

Re: Blu-Ray Rather Than DVD

Col, I think you'll find that DV (mini or cam) records at the rate of 25mbps.

Re: Blu-Ray Rather Than DVD

I also find that on a good TV screen the difference between HD and SD is not always dramatic (sport seems to be the exception) but that is because the SD that we are looking at was originated as HD and the kit being used is in a different league to ours. I was referring to DVD's and BD's that we can...

Re: Blu-Ray Rather Than DVD

Chrisbitz, I can agree with you unreservedly, it's the artistic quality of the film that counts - every time. Having said that I repeat my earlier statements that a good film will appear to be even better when viewed in HD. I have done SD DVD's (downscaled in my encoding software, BitVice) and BD's ...

Re: Blu-Ray Rather Than DVD

Since I started this thread may I comment that no one has addressed my query, namely that so few 'punters' seem to have obtained BD players to use with their darn great HD screens! Odd when you consider the improvement over DVD's and the fact that BD players upscale (to some extent) DVD's.

Blu-Ray Rather Than DVD

Having just completed a project I have been engaged in outputting the film on to various forms of media for exhibition and distribution. I am amazed at the difference in quality between tape, DVD and Blu-Ray as displayed on a modern 40" high quality TV screen. Until very recently I found tape t...

Re: Lone worker v Group productions

The vast majority of my films have been the result of working completely alone and I've never felt at a disadvantage. Quite the contrary actually, when working with others I have felt inhibited and less confident in what I'm doing. Alone I can concentrate more effectively, can feel more creative and...

Re: New Facebook Group for Amateur Filmmakers

Good question Granfer but I wouldn't dare to voice it! Actually I keep getting mails from something called Linkedin, can someone enlighten me please? A lot of the names quoted are people I know, some in the film making business, suppliers and friends who make films. If I do whatever it is I am being...

I knew that our respected 'moderator' would know, by the way doesn't the Church of Scotland have a Moderator? Surely not our Dave?

Re: Fluctuating exposure

Understood Peter but I'm glad you enjoy docs on TV.(in 16:9?). You're right about the aversion to silence though but I must admit it does take some courage to leave a period of silence in an edit, I'm always worried about losing the audience's attention. On the other hand some of the most dramatic s...

Re: Fluctuating exposure

Peter, oh Peter - you are a film maker (and quite an ambitious one I feel) you don't go to the cinema? I know there is a lot of rubbish in many of the 'chain' cinemas but also some quite exceptional films from (mostly European) artists. It is really educational to absorb the moods created, the timin...

Re: Fluctuating exposure

Peter, you say you don't feel comfortable with the 16:9 aspect ratio. Surely by now you will be well used to seeing most TV pictures in this aspect and cinemas ceased projecting the old 'academy' aspect in the late 50's. Personally I find it so much more satisfying composing for 16:9 as against 4:3 ...

Re: overscan - thank goodness it's behind us

Another problem Tom is you don't know how people have their TV's set up. I see so many with the aspects all over the place and when I mention it I get a comment like "Oh, I don't know about all that". The modern TV's have so many options available that it can be confusing and to make thing...
