Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS

festivals such as BIAFF where the judges use TV/film art from the 50s, as their reference Naughty, naughty, but point well made! Why in 2013 should judges even mention "jump cuts" which are now a standard part of contemporary cinema unless they are mired in a mid 20th Century conception o...

Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS

Ghosh it is easy to say something which isn’t clear! Tim, I was writing about myself as a film maker. I know you were and it was clear (and I fully agree with you!). However I was using it as an example of the sort of comment to which a film maker may take offence. I am at a loss to know how I coul...

Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS

An interesting explanation by Peter which highlights how comments made by judges, presumably with the intention of being helpful, can be insulting to film makers. "You should have used a tripod; there seemed to be enough room for one." That, in my opinion, is a thoughtless comment. The judg...

Re: Would you join a club?

Bookmarked. I'll be watching closely. Interesting that the first two responses say "Yes, I'd join". I guess the follow up is "Then why haven't you?" which may provide us with the answer to all our questions. If only it was that simple. On a forum I frequent, the advice "Join...

Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS

I'm dismayed to read of the expressions of disappointment from some film makers on their results. Surely disappointment is a perfectly reasonable reaction if one's film does not do as well as one had hoped. I haven't read anything which is critical of the judges (with the one possible exception of ...

Re: YOUR BIAFF 2013 RESULTS

Howard, you are not alone. Fraught has mentioned his disappointment and another friend of mine submitted a film that he was hopeful of four or five stars came back with a two! (His other film, not as good in my opinion, received three) The judges comments did not appear to fit with the new "gui...

Re: Are we ready for an "Upright Film Contest"?

Portrait format is great, for portraits. For anything else it just seems wrong. If someone really wants to make a film in portrait format they're welcome to try, but it's bound to look odd when shown because TVs and projection screens are landscape. However many "films" nowadays (basicall...

Re: Genres / descriptions

What would be appropriate descriptions? As Ned points out, it is sometimes good to have special categories. There may be a few festivals that have a "comedy/horror" category and makers (and fans) of those types of films would naturally be drawn to them. But I don't see that festivals have...

Re: Genres / descriptions

My gut instinct was to agree with Michael, but thinking about it I can see many advantages and only one disadvantage - that being that, like creators of all sorts of art, we don't tend to like our work to be "pigeonholed" Does it help people choose which films to see at BIAFF for example? ...

May I add my good wishes too, Willy. Unlike Ian, I did get to meet you, last year on the BIAFF Sunday where you activly sought me out as a friend made on this forum. This is just another example of what a true gentleman you are.
