Re: anyone using the 5DII

Although as you say I touched on every negative of the 5DII, I was answering Dave's question as to how it fared as a video camera. You say, '36x24mm (full 35mm) thats 5616 x 3744 resolution...lordy lordy.... 21.1mbegapixel !! allowing 1080 at 30fps in video mode...' but of course the chip is masked ...

Re: anyone using the 5DII

The 5DII is one of the first-off hybrids that shoots full frame digital stills and masked frame 16:9 movies. As a still camera it's just wonderful, but as a video camera it's seriously lacking in the ergonomics department I feel. We all know the audio side of movies is just as important as the pictu...

Film formats over the years

I found this to be a fascinating read and an introduction to the vast array of film formats there have been over the years.

Re: Tape is fading away
3 x 1/6 CMOS, Tom, you could shoot a wedding with this camera and deliver stunning results. The huge negative is that it is so small it will fit easily into a jacket pocket with room for a microphone, not good for impressing clients
I beg to differ Ned (Gentleman-sp...

Tape is fading away

I'm pretty sure my next camera won't be tape fed simply because they're fading away pretty fast and because computers are arriving with enough grunt to handle AVCHD. The one issue which is proving most contentious is the quality versus editablity of AVCHD. I have already had one club member with edi...

What camcorder and what accessories should I buy?

This is slanted towards the American buyer, but there's a lot of good hints and tips given, and the video is worth watching.

Re: Good quality machines, bad quality films

You want close ups? Get to see Westcliff's (South Essex Moviemakers or somesuch these days) 'Little Chef'. Wow - impressive stuff.

[Tom means "South Essex Film Makers" and is probably referring to their famous spoof adverts - Ed]

MiniDV is dying out slowly, but it's had a mighty fine run for 14 years, recording DV in LP, SP and DVCAM, and HDV too.

Re: Canon's new HV40

Strange that at this week's Video Forum (Earls Court) Canon were only showing the HV30, not the new 40 model. They seemed quite surprised that I knew of the latest model - haven't they heard of the internet?

Re: The Panasonic HMC151

Good to read your thoughts Peter. I did look at the little ''TRV900'' HM100 from JVC but not the HM700 as such a shoulder-mount design doesn't interest me in the slightest. Leastways not if such a bulky camera only feeds 1"/3 chips as it's more a photographic issue (DOF and diffraction) than te...

The Panasonic HMC151

Panasonic's new DVX100 is called the HMC151. They've abandoned Mini DV tape, bypassed HDV and gone AVCHD (MPEG 4) straight to SD card. At Earls Court this week (the Video Forum) I had a good look at the 151 as a replacement for my Sony Z1. Interestingly all the tech bods and gurus over at DV Doctor ...

The old curiosity shop

With my friend Ray's permission I copy and paste his post to DVDoctor here: =================================== Every so often there is a query about film projectors. Usually the answer is "try The Widescreen Centre, just off Baker Street". However in recent years they have moved away from...
They seem to take the view that 1280x720 is enough to qualify for the HD label.
And they're right to take that view Dave, as anything over and above 720 x 576 is classed as 'high definition' (or to be pedantic, 'higher definition'. And I feel we shouldn't be...
