Re: About Death (Sobre la Muerte)

Hold on; I didn't realize that David Newman ran BIAFF single handed; without detracting from the great job he does this is a recipe for disaster. First recognize that BIAFF is presently the most valuable asset the IAC has (no; not the membership) and until it finds more membership attractions must p...

Re: About Death (Sobre la Muerte)

If in doubt; ask. The makers of films that look to be outside the BIAFF rules should be contacted and requested to provide financing and budget details. When I was involved with AMPS and submissions director of DOCUTAH we frequently contacted entrants for information about their entries. mostly rela...

Re: THE MOVIE MAKER TEN BEST COMPETITION

Not strictly on topic but related. When the orders came down from above that there must be a clear out, much of the stuff being the remains of now defunct AMPS I found an archive very interested in all things relating to amateur film. They happily took four box loads (over 120 lbs.) of books, tapes,...

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

Thanks to Tom for forwarding the comments. I feel the rating and comments very fair; better than I had expected. The other entry was also a solo effort a product of the lock down with my usual film making brought o a halt. I am amazed that David Newman does all this work for BIAFF alone; as this Fes...

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

I received an e-mail that one of my entries, Last Lines, is to be screened but no info on rating/judges comments.

Re: How do you learn to make better films?

BIAFF is the only festival I am aware of that delivers the judges comments to the entrants. This alone is worth the cost of entry. It is one of the few ways we can get a written reaction to what we have created, awards and stars are OK but a detailed reaction is what we want. My primary interest is ...

Re: What constitutes an amateur film?

Willy, thanks for the comment on a category for film students. As you say film students have access to a wide range of resources and produce an astonishing range of films. Many of them graduate but follow other professions but still with a love of film making and could be a valuable resource for the...

Tim; I seemed to have missed something; what film are you quoting?

Thanks

Re: What constitutes an amateur film?

Now that BIAFF is on Film Freeway it is going to attract "pot hunters" from every corner of the film making spectrum. An additional load on David Newman to spot the ringers. But then I suppose a multi-million film could be made "for fun". I entered two films via Film Freeway to B...

Re: What constitutes an amateur film?

What do you mean by "blatantly contradicted the spirit of the rules?" Please be specific because there is as you point out a desire for a sort of "amateur" quality that some people want with an avoidance of being "too professional". When I was involved with AMPS here in...

Re: VideoPad

I believe the Wansfell courses were run in conjunction with the local education authority so maybe there is some way of subsidising as adult education; perhaps the University 3rd age (is that correct is it U3?) may be a source of support? My point is that these courses would appeal to people of what...

Re: VideoPad

Jill; yes the IAC ran weekend courses at Wansfell; they may have been in association with Essex CC; successful and well attended. I believe they also ran courses at another center in the Midlands. The earliest I attended at Wansfell were in the mid 60s; the NLE in the late 80s. In my view this is a ...

Re: VideoPad

Many years ago I was introduced to NLE through the weekend training courses run by the IAC at Wansfell College. I remember attending courses run by David Jackson which established my basic understanding of NLE. Here is an opportunity for the IAC when the present situation eases but is now perhaps th...

As an alternative have a look at HitFilm Express which is free and well featured; lots of demos on YouTube.
