Re: Horror Adrenaline Rush

Depends if you see it in 4DX mode. I wouldn't bother; I found it a distraction to be shaken in my seat, to have smells whafted at me, to have rain on my glasses, to have smoke obscure the screen and to have electronic flashguns firing at me in the thunderstorms. It's worse than 3D. Give me a bigger,...

Re: Horror Adrenaline Rush

That's a good last line. Back in the day our soundtracks were always fighting the noise of the projector, meaning that subtle soundtracks were out of the window. BBC sound f/x of birds used to be the amateur moviemaking joke. Now the only noise the audience hears are the noises you want them to hear.

Re: Horror Adrenaline Rush

I did like A Quiet Place, and now I see there's a sequel. The good thing about modern digital audio tracks is that when it's quiet, it really is quiet. Scary quiet. Of course the auditorium amplifiers add some mush, but nothing like the mush we used to listen to from optical and magnetic tracks.

Re: What constitutes an amateur film?

Ah, what constitutes an amateur film popped up again in the between-films discussion on the BIAFF Zoom meetings over the weekend. It does appear that the longer your film (especially if it's produced to meet Netflix's strict guidelines) and the longer your cast list, the more you'll get IAC members ...

Re: THE MOVIE MAKER TEN BEST COMPETITION

I had Gordon Cameron Jackson, OBE, a Scottish actor of some renown, give me mine.

Re: THE MOVIE MAKER TEN BEST COMPETITION

Fascinating to look back at the Movie Maker film write-ups from the early 80s, so thank you for posting the link, Howard. I've spent happy hours reading the pages.

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

Good points guys. I've often found myself outnumbered by the other two judges when it comes to pushing to the next Star level, so I applaud Dave and Jan's thoughts that we're being too 'mean' and too 'safe' in our Star ratings. At least I push for the judge who rated the film highest to write it up,...

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

I'm guessing David and Mike Whyman are up2here in getting the multiple centre pages of the next FVM together, listing the BIAFF placings. Checking and double-checking the results must take many days.

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

A very good ask, Howard. I really enjoyed the film when I asked Michael to send me the Vimeo link. It's a fascinating look at people as they go about their lives - in one day out of thousands. I sent him my unofficial 'judgement', because I was somewhat gob-smacked to read his One Star BIAFF write-up.

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

I had the judges' write-up on my phone, Howard, so as soon as I read Ned's post I forwarded it to him. Here's two lines from the write-up:

'Overall this is a Four Star production because of the script, the content and the effectiveness of the calm delivery.'

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

OK Howard, you'll have to hear me singing this.

CON-GRAT-YOU-LATIONS
CON-GRAT-YOU-LATIONS!
.. and so on.

Well deserved wins in both endeavours, young man!

I've never used Magix but have you used YouTube's search facility Roy? I bet there's a few videos been uploaded on how to do just that - burn discs direct from the timeline.

Re: Sad news: RIP JOHN ASTIN

Such sad news and so completely unexpected. A great filmmaker, so it was really good to see the 2019 BIAFF interview with him again. Does anyone know if he had relatives who might be keeping his archive of prize-winning films safe?

Re: What constitutes an amateur film?

You haven't missed anything Ned, it was just one of the films Tim and I were asked to judge raised our suspicions as to its amateur status. Googling its production costs tended to confirm our thoughts. Good film though, no doubt about it.
