Re: BAD SAD NEWS - The Guernsey Lily ends this year!

Ned, I see that you are in England, do you have time to give me a ring, I believe you have my number and E Mail address.

Re: BAD SAD NEWS - The Guernsey Lily ends this year!

I can confirm the bad news as I've heard from a very reliable source. The Lily really is a wonderful festival and I've always found the judging to be extremely accurate, I am biased since I've usually done well there! The atmosphere is always friendly yet serious about film and film making and very ...

Re: It really is time!!!!

One of my films is being screened by a Sky channel (280 called Horse & Country) next Tuesday at 9.30. Does that make me a professional? Surely not and just to make certain I 'm not getting paid! Actually I tried to get them to pay the IAC (as a charitable donation) but they wouldn't do it. Plent...

Re: Film Festival Time Limits

Good to see that my 'thread' has been revived by Ken Wilson It is a tricky problem but it is not confined to the non commercial world. Sky want to transmit one of my films on one of their channels which runs for 29 minutes and the 'slot' is only 25 minutes (the dreaded commercials!). Four minutes th...

Re: MIN DV TAPE / STOREAGE

Sorry to be a doom monger but how are you planning to play these 100 year gold DVD's? Surely the whole game will have moved on many times. Perhaps portable Hard Drives (preferably solid state) might be a better archive medium. Prices are coming down all the time and I'm using them to back up camera ...

Re: Home Movie Roadshow, Sunday BBC2

I was a bit irritated by their going on about how it used to be with amateur film making as if it is an historical curiosity. They referred to the IAC (giving it the original full title) and how they used to run competitions, no mention of the current BIAFF or present day film making. True, they did...

Re: Make a Blu-Ray DVD without a Blu-Ray burner or Blu-ray disk

Billy, yes I've heard of this and someone did a workshop presentation on it but I'm darned if I can remember where I saw it, sorry. Presumably your object is to get BD quality without having to get a BD burner - nice work if you can get it - as the song goes.

Re: Judges and their credibility

Chris's last post was the most sensible in the whole thread. Of course we make films for enjoyment (and that includes even the big name professionals) and anyone who doesn't enjoy the satisfaction from making them is probably doing a lousy job. Speaking personally, I enter films in competitions and ...

Re: Judges and their credibility

Couldn't agree more Mike. It's the artistic quality that counts, not the technical skill. Almost anybody can produce good pictures and audio but it all hangs on what they do with it.

Re: Judges and their credibility

As many of my film friends know I abhor the fact that non commercial film makers sometimes resent the presence among us of anyone tainted with the brush of 'professional'. This is really against our interests because the more connection we have with the professional film world our standard of film m...

THE NAME OF OUR ORGANISATION

Are the Powers That Be reading this thread I ask? Couldn't agree more with what has been written. I too have found the dreaded "A" word an embarrassment in certain circumstances. Let the judgement of our work rest on a viewing rather than a pre judgement based on the description amateur. T...

Re: Blu-ray at contests/festivals

That's pretty well what the cinemas do with their 'digital' programmes. A full length feature film arrives on a small drive, size around 150 Gb's, the cinema decodes it with information supplied by the distributor and away they go. Mind you the projectors cost around £60,000!

Re: Blu-ray at contests/festivals

Ah but Tom, you and I differed in our opinions on that! You even thought my BD showing was really sharp, I thought it no better than the SD DVD's that I was used to seeing the film on. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder we hear, sharpness, definition, call it what you will, is often the subject of...

Re: Judges and their credibility

Chris, I saw that Morecambe Bay film, I was the judge who didn't give it first place at the Burnley Festival!! I was sorely tempted though because I really liked it and it is the sort of documentary I try and make myself. I think it was second, mainly because the winner was an imaginative piece whic...
