Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

Your last two sentences really made me laugh out loud, Howard.

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

I had the judges' write-up on my phone, Howard, so as soon as I read Ned's post I forwarded it to him. Here's two lines from the write-up:

'Overall this is a Four Star production because of the script, the content and the effectiveness of the calm delivery.'

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS

OK Howard, you'll have to hear me singing this.

CON-GRAT-YOU-LATIONS
CON-GRAT-YOU-LATIONS!
.. and so on.

Well deserved wins in both endeavours, young man!

Re: Magix movie edit pro premium

I've never used Magix but have you used YouTube's search facility Roy? I bet there's a few videos been uploaded on how to do just that - burn discs direct from the timeline.

Re: Sad news: RIP JOHN ASTIN

Such sad news and so completely unexpected. A great filmmaker, so it was really good to see the 2019 BIAFF interview with him again. Does anyone know if he had relatives who might be keeping his archive of prize-winning films safe?

Re: What constitutes an amateur film?

You haven't missed anything Ned, it was just one of the films Tim and I were asked to judge raised our suspicions as to its amateur status. Googling its production costs tended to confirm our thoughts. Good film though, no doubt about it.

Re: What constitutes an amateur film?

I think, Ned, that your question should be specifically aimed at David Newman, as it is he who has final arbitration rights over who gains entry to the competition and who does not.

What constitutes an amateur film?

This year, at the online Zoom BIAFF judging sessions, there were two or three films that blatantly contradicted the spirit of the rules governing eligibility, primarily in the funding department. They've subsequently been removed from our competition, but we still have to be a bit careful. I've been...

Re: The Magazine

It's really good to read all these different viewpoints - there must be more words here in this thread than in any issue of FVM. I liked Ned C's reference to N C filmmakers. Nice one. I pip Ken in that I've been writing Positive Image for over 21 years now, and just yesterday had an email from an IA...

Re: Effect of polarising filters

These clip on shades ARE polarised lenses presumably Peter. If so, then they're polarising the wavelengths of light, and light reflected off different surfaces does behave in different ways. Polarised lenses let you 'look into' a pond, whereas reflected light of grass appears to be unchanged. The di...

Re: FVM articles

Graduated filters are ok when used with big sensors (such as are used in your average DSLR) but are a bit of a no-no on the typical camcorder that use tiny sensors and very short focal lengths. Landscapes are generally shot at the wideangle end of the zoom where the depth of field is so great, even ...

Re: Sad news: RIP Reg Lancaster

Yes, sad news indeed. He entrusted me to transfer some of his 8mm films to DVD some years ago, and his Needle in the Sky looked so good I used to take it on my club visits to show how good digitised film could look.

Re: FVM articles

I think it's a good idea to include your email address Ken, as anything to make it easier for folk to get in touch has got to be a good thing. In the September issue of FVM I tore into the Winait film scanner, listing its good and bad points. One reader had a question for me, but he had to be pretty...
