Stephen - bless you for even thinking about projection quality! So many places seem to think that just getting an image roughly on or near the screen is enough. If you want to get the very best results you will need two hours at least in the club rooms with the projector and a test disc. The one I u...

At this moment 22.30 in UK (which appears here as 21.30 - I will try to switch to British summer time!) there are several "Bots" from search engines: google, inktomi and yahoo among them. Guests - i.e. real people - can read the forum, but even if they try, they cannot write to it without ...

If I were the cameraman, I suspect I would have been running to the toilets, Willy! What an awesome responsibility. Knowing you, though, my guess is that your main concern would be for the dignity of the occasion, so that nothing would detract from the remembrance of those young men who died in the ...

Don't stop bringing us back to the subject, Roy. We tend to veer off onto judging because all too often we only consider serious aspects of film making in the context of competitions and judging. For my part I like some "modern" techniques but not the extremes. It becomes a matter of taste...

Hi Peter, thanks for getting the poll working ... that's where your wide experience of forums (?fora) shows!

I've removed the previous attempt at setting up a poll to reduce the confusion.

I am! In some ways I've been doing that for years. Although I have been interested in amateur movie making since childhood I am not a movie maker. I am an enthusiastic watcher of movies - professional and amateur. I was recruited by various competition organisers to help judge and to bring just that...

IDEAS FOR CLUB MEETINGS

There is a lot to be said for getting together with anyone who shares your enthusiasm - sometimes to learn, sometimes to teach, and always to encourage each other. That's one good reason for movie making clubs. The catch is sorting out what kind of events could be offered to club members. So for the...

IAC 75 ... Bradford, IMAX and all that

So how did it all go?

I have heard privately that the selection of movies shown on the enormous screen looked great - maybe even a little too bright.

Those who were there ... please tell us what we missed!

One of the delights of these forums is that everyone using them does have a sense of humour (even if they deny it !) and that we all exaggerate from time to time ... either to make a point or to stimulate discussion. From the recent postings in this thread, one point struck me as specially useful - ...

A movie may go against your deepest beliefs: political, moral, religious, ethical ... but you should try to judge them fairly. Movies about abortion, paedophilia, satanism, creationism, National Front, Young Communists etc come along once in a while and have to be assessed. The quote was part of so...

Just a quick comment here ... in the last few weeks I have watched almost 300 assorted non-commercial movies with my judging hat on. Many were excellent. There were far fewer technical faults than a similar collection might have presented in the days of cine. But there were a few issues: Surprisingl...

There is real rejoicing in movie clubs when someone comes along saying they want to be a scene-shifter, lighting gaffer, editor, props person, continuity checker, researcher or writer. The next most welcome newbie is an actor. It seems to me that a lot more might be done when advertising clubs to ma...

Some people like working with clubs, others do not. What surprised me on first contact with the movement is how little time most clubs spend making movies or even talking seriously about how movies are made. So much attention seemed to be paid to technicalities - in my early days cine cameras with m...

I found the rules on formats for the various competitions very confusing and it did stop me from entering initially... I still find conflicts in what does make a 'proper' entry specifically with format and start up methods... It's true, Stephen, that some sets of rules sound like your old headmaste...

BENQ apparently stands for "Bringing Enjoyment and Quality to life." The name was adopted by the Taiwanese company who used to be known as Acer. I am intrigued as to why you want to burn DVD+ discs, Willy. The advice we usually get is that DVD- ones are handled by more players than any oth...
