Re: IAC International Judging ...

OK, I'm lost now. Is there anyone still arguing against professionals being involved in making and amateur film? It seems to me we're all in favour and have a diverse range of views justifying it.

Re: IAC International Judging ...

I'm inclined to agree with Chris about the IAC being irrelevant to pros. Winning or doing well in an "amateur" competition is not likely to enhance a professional's reputation. Doing badly, on the other hand, could damage it. Why would a pro risk that? Well, obviously Stewart Mackay was pr...

Re: Advice please - urgently needed.

Hi Suzie, I'm rather unclear about what you're asking. I think you're after recommendations for a camera that will produce footage suitable with Adobe Photoshop/Premiere Elements and Crazy Talk within your budget (but I think you neglected to specify your budget!) To be honest I fear you will have a...

Re: My latest Movie short

From on your own Youtube channel you have exactly the same type of "movie", a style that has been made many thousands of times, creative...no, good camerawork....no, interesting....no, its just a series of badly shot clips put together with annoying music. Hmmmm. I was hoping for a justif...

Re: What do you do in your filming world

Whatever's needed! I've mostly been a one-man-band but I get far more satisfaction working with a team - or more specifically with one other person in the main. I find two minds working on the idea, then the script, then staging, cinematography (OK - where we're going to stick the camera) and edit w...

Re: Sad News

Sad indeed. I only net him the once, two or three years back, when I drove him to and from a competition he was judging. Good company. I probably learnt more about the amateur filmmaking world in those two hours than I've done before or since.

Re: opening scenes

Nice music. There's a certain amount of tension in it (which makes us want to watch) and sensitivity as well - presumably appropriate for the subject matter. Choosing music is something I spend hours and hours on and am rarely happy with. This really bugs me as I like to think I know a little bit ab...

Re: I had Animal Planet round filming my house yesterday!

Interesting photos, chris. I like the way they set the camera up halfway down your hall so they could get far enough away from you and you far enough away from the background to get some depth to the image (and presumably som shallow DoF). I liked the way they had a softlight (which looked like it h...

Re: opening scenes

It looked very good to me. It drew me in, made me want to find out more , which is exactly what an opening should do. I wasn't sure about the rather sinister sound over the very beginning I appreciate that's your ident and not part of the film, but I wonder whether it detracts a little from the sens...

Re: My latest Movie short

It was a themed competition Tim. ... sometimes it is relaxing (like those weird dolphin sound tapes that run for nearly an hour!) to just have some pleasant pictures to watch against an equally pleasant music background. Understood on both counts. And as a competition, it can serve a purpose of foc...
