Re: When is a Blu-Ray not a Blu-Ray?

Standards do change ... though in the case of DVDs and BluRay changes are usually backwards compatible. The most useful advice - often heard from Tom and repeated in handbooks and articles all over the place - is use good quality blank discs. Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden are usually very reliable. Bewar...

Re: Adobe Premier Elements (Books on)

YES! Any computer that connects even briefly to the web must be protected! There is a minimal protection built in to Windows, but this really is a case where spending a little on an anti-virus system is excellent insurance. Kaspersky seems to get the most plaudits these days and is a fair price at u...

GoPro and similar cameras

Santa left a GoPro look-a-like but I have little interest in it as a dashboard camera and do not do exciting downhill ski-jumps ...

Any tips on how best to use it for other purposes. For a start I will need some sort of handgrip.

Re: Adobe Premier Elements (Books on)

My past practice has been to unplug the editing computer from my internet connection, whenever it was not needed to register a product or obtain updates. Even if you connect to your router by wifi it is usually possible to switch off the connection. (Laptops often have a dedicated function key for t...

Is my projector a 7 year-old girl?

Our video projector (I much prefer the Eurospeak term "beamer") runs most nights with an HDMI cable connected to the BluRay player. Today we unplugged from the player and plugged it into a laptop. When set to mirror the laptop screen we did get an image, but coated in pink. While I am happy to take ...

SHOWMANSHIP

We naturally concentrate on the making of films ... but perhaps neglect the presentation of them. In the days of perforated film a show at home meant we had to re-arrange furniture to set up a screen, (or move pictures if the wall was our screen), set up a stand, run cables for loudspeakers and turn...

Re: The NTRIAC Online Film Competition Experiment

I think the file size only referred to the limit imposed by the WeTransfer system for free transfer of a film. The official website makes no reference to that ... ans there would appear to be no limit on films that are already on an online service such as Vimeo ... but the scale of fees does suggest...

Re: The NTRIAC Online Film Competition Experiment

For the sake of the judges it is probably as well that I am not in any of those catchment areas !

People have been asking for online entries of films in British competitions for ages ... and here is a Region making a start. Give it a go.

Re: What is an amateur film?

How do you determine that the film maker had "no profit motive in mind "?

No, I am not seriously asking, just pointing out that is weak point in the definition. We have been bouncing all these ideas around the UNICA committee. I started with Ned's fine definition.

We are still seeking ...

Re: CONNECTING CABLE

This topic was much discussed around 2012 on various forums. The consensus then was that such cables sometimes worked ... but it seemed to depend on the software you had. A more reliable route was reckoned to be to use a converter box like Pinnacle Dazzle at around £55. These still seem to be availa...

Re: From tape to memory card

Archiving is a problem for which there is no decent solution as yet. First ask yourself how much you want to archive. Once you have delivered a wedding video, do you really want to hang on to all the footage you shot? One side note ... since your failed camera was new the technology has improved at ...

Re: Blu-ray discs

Thinking of your previous posts I was reluctantly coming to the conclusion that your discs may have been the problem. 90% of the time discs are wonderful - good value and function well. Sadly the occasional bad et of discs comes along. You may well be right to guess the Verbatim ones were fake ... t...
