Re: BIAFF 2018

Ned - just a note that IAC has to operate under the rules for a charity - and means very little in the way of direct benefits can go to members. IAC is supposed to work for the public education and good.

Re: Better Film Sound

I hope that someone like John Roberts or Alan Colegrave will comment, since they have far more knowledge of sound technicalities than I do.

My only contribution is that we must depend on human ears ... our own, or if we know we have hearing deficiences, the ears of trusted friends.

Re: BIAFF 2018

I did not mean to suggest just throwing money at BIAFF ... but that IAC should not insist that BIAFF and the competition should break even. The most common complaint I hear about BIAFF is that it is uncomfortable and difficult to see the award winner shows in a packed, flat ballroom. That is where i...

Re: BIAFF 2018

UNICA is - not surprisingly - facing many of the same problems. Most people who attend BIAFF do not take much interest in it beyond the weekend itself. They have other concerns such as their regions, their clubs and for some of them ... their lives. So their views are rarely given and even m...

Re: BIAFF 2018

I expect Ned has been busy with DocUtah festivals and, I hope, with some film making. It is always a problem of publicity and promotion - festivals, events and websites all need to be known. We are competing against industries with huge advertising budgets. As well as keeping an eye on here and very...

Re: TURN TURN TURN

Kind thought, Michael, but I am not sure I have the patience to work hard enough at making good movies. I do indeed have a proper camcorder, but also like to use the phone for odd pics and clips since it is usually in my pocket ... often playing me music from Radio 3 or talk from Radio 4 while I walk.

Re: TURN TURN TURN

John and Tim - umpteen thanks. Both your techniques worked for me. And you showed me more of the power of this editing system. There is so much hidden away that is downright excllent ... once you have found it. I am resolved to start any future phone filming with the phone horizontal ... Now I just ...

TURN TURN TURN

Shooting with my phone, I started in the portrait mode, since I find it easier to access the controls that way. Then, of course, I turned to horizontal for shooting the scene. When loaded the clip into my editor (currently Movie Studio Platinum 13) the clip was all portrait format with a black frame...

Re: Voice recorders

Can I ask anyone who has experience of using a phone (Apple or other) as a recording device for film sound to contribute? Judy - a small point: don't ignore the psychology of mics. A flat plate (PZM) is less daunting than a mic on a stand "pointing at me!" Lavalier (clip-ons) suggest a businesslike ...

Re: THE BIAFF FESTIVAL 2017

Lots of interesting ideas in this thread, but some need more thought. At present the 250 or so films coming to BIAFF need five teams of three people to do first round assessment. That work starts Friday 8pm and ends Sunday about 3pm ... so say two days. If a single panel were to watch all the films ...

Re: UNICA 2017 - World Movie Contest in Dortmund.

Great news, Willy! Start at http://www.unica-web.com for information and there are links from there to the website, which the German hosts have built. The venue is the Zeche Zollern - the headquarters of a former coal-minng company, itself once a mine. It is now a jewel on the industrial trail - a m...

Re: Authenticism .. or not?

My favourite example of this was back in the days of black-and-white tv ... Scottish Television made a serial version of Rob Roy whose title sequence was a sword-fight over heather and rough ground. They had complaints from viewers because some of the weeds in the grass had not been brought into thi...

Re: THE BIAFF FESTIVAL 2017

It is often said that BIAFF judges and audiences do not like long films ... but Vermijo was a Diamond winner and thought by many people to be the best of the event and it is an hour long. The much-admired Exploding Heart also got a Diamond and is 32 minutes long. The crucial difference is that good ...
