Re: THE BIAFF FESTIVAL 2017

Howard, you have not commented on the discussion between Ken and myself concerning qualifications for judging. Silly minor points that you refer to are, we all agree, nothing to do with judging a film. I actually noticed a glaring mistake in the BIAFF film Archway 0173, but it didn't matter one iota...

Re: THE BIAFF FESTIVAL 2017

No, no,no Ken! Not judges who must be film makers. That is one of the problems. Film makers are looking for problems that are not always (hardly ever) going to affect the overall quality of the film. In my honest opinion and experience, the most intelligent and sensitive judges are not making films ...

Re: THE BIAFF FESTIVAL 2017

Willy and Howard, we shouldn't let this develop into a criticism of either this years results or judges in general. They do their best in difficult circumstances. I think that having to write detailed critiques sometimes rather interferes with the job of deciding the film's merits vis a vis others i...

Re: THE BIAFF FESTIVAL 2017

My condolences Willy, I'm afraid that at our age we seem to be attending funerals rather more frequently than we like.

No hurry to view anything, but have a look at how my media designer Grandson has set out my site, rather too flattering to the films I fancy!

Re: THE BIAFF FESTIVAL 2017

Willy, I haven't seen you for some years and was very sorry that you were not at BIAFF. It was one of the best for some time, the screenings were well handled and apart from Lorrimer's justifiable criticism of the blackout, there were no hitches. The hotel and food were particularly good. You mentio...

Re: THE BIAFF FESTIVAL 2017

Gosh, only two posts so far, better get in early before the deluge (?) I agree with most of Howard's favourites but he hasn't mentioned the winner - 'I Am'. I wrote on my programme, Winner, just as the image was fading from the screen on Sunday morning! The additional awards of Best Acting and Best ...

Cor, Ned, you can leave that lovely view and swop it for Market Harborough? I will be great to see you though, and you're bringing 'the boss'?

Re: BIAFF 2017 Results

Dear Ken, don't try and rationalise people's (or judges) comments on your films, I've learnt that over the last forty years or so of film making. I was the person you were referring to who forecast his own judgements the opposite way that they turned out. In fact, one of our respected forum correspo...

Re: BIAFF 2017 Results

No Brian, you're not "going wrong", you're making the film that you want to make. You mustn't take awards and comments too seriously. You can express surprise, as indeed as I have, but you have to understand that there can never be a definitive judgement on a film. Many people have many different vi...

Re: BIAFF 2017 Results

Oh dear Willy, don't take it too hard, judging film is a very subjective matter. I suspect that both our films were a trifle too long and, when viewed together with shorter more snappy productions, they tend to get marked down. We also have to move with the times. Both of us have been making films f...

Re: BIAFF 2017 Results

Well, I'm not always surprised but I was this year! I forecast a Four Star and a Three Star for my two entries and that's exactly what I got. But, in the wrong order from my forecast. I never criticise judges and I won't but the '4' is so inferior to the '3' that I do wonder. In fact, someone who's ...

Re: While you wait for BIAFF results ...

Well done Howard, it doesn't often happen with us non commercial film makers. I've had Diamond winners rejected all over the place. As to the absence of feed back, that's to be expected, as I said, they get thousands of entries, quite a money spinner, which is, I suspect, the whole point. Actually, ...

Re: While you wait for BIAFF results ...

Dave, there are two very active sites also. Withoutabox and Film Freeway. Mostly pro festivals but I've had a few 'accepted'. Not many mind you, they get literally thousands of entries.

Re: Amateur photographer film competition

No Tim. Neither I, nor I suspect Michael Gough, would want to make a documentary five minutes in length. A fun pastiche maybe but to actually 'get into' a subject or a personality, you need more time. I know I get criticised for the length of my films, maybe with some justification, but, as an 'amat...

Re: Premiere 6.5 problems and HD,

Interesting comments from you both on the question of archiving. Tom's absolutely right, archiving to tape isn't archiving. I have a professional Sony deck (DSR 20 for those that know it) and it's built like a tank, but I wouldn't like to guarantee that it will play my DVCAM cassettes for ever. Any ...
