Re: BIAFF 2018 RESULTS

No Willy, no bad language (other than maybe 'film language'). Have a look at it on michaelslowefilms.com , the site containing most of my 50 years of film making. We shall miss you at BIAFF, next time you are in the UK send me an E Mail and we'll try and get together. I wish you well.

Re: Filming shows in 4K and cropping

I've never had to film a live show but have in the past recorded talks. Sometimes I was able to change camera positions which was quite possible by leaving the camera running, which meant that the radio mic on the subject was always capturing audio, and I avoided jump cutting by shooting shots of th...

Re: BIAFF 2018 RESULTS

I think that we will have to get serious about our 'bar meeting'. I think that the best time would be the hour before the reception prior to the Saturday night dinner. I'm not sure of the timing but presumably there would be time. We might have to cut short that soak in the bath. I'll post again nea...

Re: BIAFF 2018 RESULTS

I can tell you that the results go out in order of merit, that's why all the fives new before the fours. Well done to our 'regulars' with their Fives. I had two Four Stars for my two docs, which is what I expected, although, we are mostly bad judges of our own films and unreasonably expect better. I...

Re: Filming shows in 4K and cropping

Tim, interesting post as this must be a common quandary for film makers shooting stage productions. If you are relying to a great extent on your camera covering the whole stage in wide angle you would do very well shooting in 4K and selecting your framing in post. Your comment on cutting problems be...

Re: BIAFF 2018

Ned, we'll continue this discussion over the meal on the BIAFF Saturday evening, but I must disagree with you profoundly. Of course student films will provide stiff competition to amateurs, surely that's what we want and it would enhance the stature of the BIAFF competition. Fencing them off in a se...

Re: Data protection Act

What about the 'spying' that can take place on anyone with a 'smart' TV and the weird and wonderful Alexa'? With the smart TV, connected to the web you can be watched in your home and every action and word recorded. Also, Alexa, which my daughter demonstrated to me last week, is also on the web and ...

Howard-Smith, only since 2008? I don't think I've missed one since the old Westminster days, first one in about 1976 I think. But then I'm very very old (so my children tell me).

Re: BIAFF 2018

Dave, I booked for BIAFF at the first opportunity because in past years I've had trouble getting a 'single' room, my wife won't attend these events! Looking forward to seeing you and Jan although you are always so busy 'hosting' foreign visitors. I fancy you may be a bit more accessible following Sc...

Re: BIAFF 2018

We're really just gossiping amongst ourselves while waiting for this year's judges to make up their minds! Can I address both John and Ned please? John, properly prepared DVD's aren't necessarily all that inferior to BD's in my experience. I always make both kinds of discs of a finished film and I'm...

Re: BIAFF 2018

I'm with Tom on the subject of discs (BD & DVD). They are still the most convenient and safest method of presenting films for viewing. I know that files are the future and, indeed, I archive everything as a file, but for showing films discs are so easy and, if properly made, pretty much idiot proof....

Re: Show reel formats

Although I am not involved in presentation, (apart from playing discs at home), I am concerned with how my films are shown by clubs or Festivals. It seems that files are now the only way to go, much as I deplore the apparent demise of discs (DVD / BD). It seems to me that discs were the perfect medi...

Re: Val Ellis

Couldn't agree more with those words concerning the dear departed Val. She was a wonderful person, great sense of humour and so encouraging to fellow film makers. She was a schoolteacher at one time I believe, all I can say is, lucky pupils.
