Re: Wobble Cam

I loved this film, great atmos, beautifully shot and edited. I was not too disturbed by the shaky opening shots but equally, they could have done just as well without them in my opinion. I think the intention was to indicate the alarm that the appearance of the vehicle caused. After those first few ...

Re: Are we ready for an "Upright Film Contest"?

Not really Ned. Having full, immediate and easy control of exposure, focus and aperture as with the three rings on the lens of a proper camera can't currently be replicated on a phone camera, quite apart from proper audio inputs. Phones will increasingly be used for 'on the spot' shooting and holida...

Re: Are we ready for an "Upright Film Contest"?

Bob, you"re absolutely right, I've just looked at past mails. However, as you will see above, I am a convert, at least for simple films. Look at my site michaelslowefilms.com and see "Down The Douro", all on an iPhone (AND I'm more than ten years old!).

Re: Are we ready for an "Upright Film Contest"?

Tom, these people are talking rubbish (I think!), because I have just made a film shot entirely on an iPhone, in landscape mode -that's turning the phone sideways on. The 16:9 aspect looks perfect to me and nobody has commented otherwise. You may see the film at BIAFF (no results yet) so look out fo...

Re: Nominations for the awards

Well Ken, it works much as the old Ten Best used to work. Judges look at all the films, in groups in the case of BIAFF, and after discussion a film is graded. The grades at this stage are four and below. If a Five or better is considered more appropriate then the film is set aside for consideration ...

Re: FVM MAGAZINE - FEBRUARY 2019

Thanks Dave, but surely you, as a prominent figure within the IAC, must have some idea of what's happening with the magazine. Is it at all possible that dear old Garth could be persuaded to carry on for the moment? I ask again, what prompted his proposed departure, not necessarily his own decision?

Re: FVM MAGAZINE - FEBRUARY 2019

On the subject of the magazine's cover, I have often, when submitting articles for publication, asked Garth would he like a film 'still' to accompany my piece. He said yes but there were problems regarding the aspect since any still was in the 16:9 aspect which is quite unsuitable for the magazine c...

Cathy, mostly relevant points, if rather sourly put. How about you applying for the vacant editor's chair?

Re: Val Ellis tribute film

May I add my name to those who are fondly remembering Val Ellis. What a lovely lady, full of fun and at the same time, serious, intelligent and witty. The children that she taught were indeed lucky to have that experience and I'm sure they will benefit from it all their lives. As a film maker Val wa...

Re: FVM Editor

I was aware of the proposed departure of our esteemed magazine editor but not of all this correspondence. In my view this is a DISASTER! The magazine is the mainstay of the IAC and, as Tom rightly said, has been improving by the year. It could be as good as the old, much missed Movie Maker, it all d...

Re: THE BIRMINGHAM FILM FESTIVAL

Thanks Dave, I already heard. FilmFreeway has taken over as the favourite now, possibly that's the cause of withoutabox's demise.

Re: THE BIRMINGHAM FILM FESTIVAL

Howard and Tim, I've often entered these competitions with films that had done well in our limited environment, mainly to see just how we compare. I have been selected for exhibition very rarely and, like Howard, got quite excited - that is until I attended the screening! I regularly found that prac...

Re: THE BIRMINGHAM FILM FESTIVAL

I too often submit films to festivals using FilmFreeway and Withoutabox. Like Howard I receive mostly rejections but get the occasional acceptance and it's always nice to see one's film projected in a cinema. However, I do agree with Tim in that most of these 'festivals' are money making enterprises...

Re: vimeo

My word Tim, you are a beaver! Searches are always erratic and I find, never the same twice. That's why I've put nearly all my films on my own site, (note the self publicity everyone!) It is: http://www.michaelslowefilms.com and I can be certain that if someone wants to see a film of mine they will ...
