Re: Forum chat in FVM

This thread has wandered over the whole scene of the current state of the traditional world of amateur film making. The world of clubs; Regions; polite comments; BIAFF, UNICA, a world in terminal decline. Replaced by YouTubers; Vimeors, with access to a huge catalog of films of every type; style; ge...

Re: Bournemouth University Graduate Film

A strangely fascinating film; watched twice and enjoyed. The animation sequence tended to obscurity at times but good transition to the live action. The Wayfarer is well done; although longish sequences never boring. There is much to be said for the "old religion" and its concern for the r...

Re: Forum chat in FVM

I agree that being a member of a film audience gives a shared experience and a different perspective compared with lone watching on computer or TV. A reasonable alternative are the Zoom group meetings where we are members of an audience and can provide comments and have a discussion. Local group vie...

Re: Sensible lighting kit for beginners ... with not much money

https://vimeo.com/37972095 This link will connect you with a film I photographed (and edited) some years ago. It was shot with two completely different sets of lighting. The the interview set was lit with conventional quartz lighting up to 08:17 where there is a complete change to interiors in a far...

Re: Is electronic communication a young persons thing?

Music festivals are about seeing and hearing our heroes in the flesh be it R and R or classical at the Proms. At film festivals we may have a Q and A and perhaps meet the film makers but there is not the same sense of involvement as a live music concert. I will put a short piece on the IAC website a...

Re: Is electronic communication a young persons thing?

Electronic communication is an everybody thing; with family spread across the USA and UK it is the way we keep in touch; far better than the very expensive occasional phone calls when we first moved to America in 1975. I like e-mail as it creates a storable record; text for quick response, WhatsApp ...

Re: The weird world of Film Festivals

Most Festivals do not differentiate between amateurs and professionals; there are just "entrants". My experience with DOCUTAH demonstrated this as I knew some of the entrants as amateurs but this was never an issue; Michael Slowe had at least two very successful screenings and his status w...

Re: The weird world of Film Festivals

Just a quick note; DOCUTAH is a good Festival for documentary film makers. There are usually between 300 and 400 entries and between 50 and 60 will be screened; a good percentage. Also; come to the Festival; this a remarkable area with five National Parks within driving distance.

Re: The weird world of Film Festivals

Hi Michael; www.docutah.com for the website; also on Film Freeway. The 2024 show is over; you can see details on the website. The originator of the Festival and head of the film school retired and a new head of the department appointed. He changed the method of evaluation and everything is now done ...

The weird world of Film Festivals

Today I received about 50 links to soon closing film festivals from Film Freeway, Of a quick sample of 15 only four reported the number of entries and the number selected for screening; these showed a consistent screening of 5% of entries. The largest had 2,000 entries the smallest 500; I must serio...

Re: Lip Synch

I used a Beaulieu (?) R16 but it was a very noisy camera, we made a sound proof enclosure but this made it bulky and difficult to handle. At work if we were doing lip synch we rented an Arriflex 16BL.

Re: Lip Synch

Interesting discussion. In 16 mm we had the Pilotone sync system with a tone generator on the camera and a cable between camera and recorder; usually a Nagra recording a pulse for each frame. Later came crystal sync which dispensed with the cable. All in the realm of the professional and used by a f...

Re: Getting an audience

I enjoyed Skullduggery and am privileged to join Albert as a On Star film maker. Humorless judges one suspects. However there is a sub text here that should be noted. Albert's audience is on-line. The nightmare many Festivals face is that we can sit in front of our, in my case 55 inch 4K/surround so...
