Re: Semi Pro Festivals

First; there is no such thing as a "semi-pro"; you are either paid for your work which makes you a professional or not in which case you are an amateur. What we need from FilmFreeway and Withoutabox is a definition of what percentage of films are screened. There are some truly outrageous results of ...

Re: Sony vegas and .mp4

Well described by John. I follow the same procedure and recently worked on recovering old PAL DV 4;3 from a mountain of tapes. Now; I live in NTSC land so out of curiosity set the render to 1920x1080 Internet HD 29.97 fps (NvidiaNEVC). The result is a perfectly transcoded PAL to NTSC file; I have su...

Re: BIAFF 2018 RESULTS

Results received; of the 8 entries from SW Utah there are 3 x 2 stars; 2 x 3 stars and 3 x 4 stars. The three 4 stars are to be screened. Thanks to all involved and a special thanks to David Newman; what an epic task!! I do need to be regularly reminded which side of the road to drive on!! Regards t...

Re: BIAFF 2018 RESULTS

Michael. your offer to meet at the bar gratefully accepted. No results for the SW Utah entries so assume we are low on the listings. Is there parking at the hotel? I have reluctantly had to rent a car again much as I now hate driving in England. Congrats to the regulars here; well done and looking f...

Re: BIAFF 2018

Equipment does not make better films, I am well aware of that; however my early experience of mixing student and general entry films was when I was first involved with AMPS. The BEST student entries were almost always made to a much higher standard than the general entries, by this I mean that the t...

Re: BIAFF 2018

Hi Michael. A separate category for students is desirable because they often have access to equipment and technology not available to most amateurs; they also have the advantage of time and skilled student crews. Some amateurs will see film students as a threat to the fairness of the general competi...

Re: BIAFF 2018

I have just re-read this thread and I think that it gets to the core of the future of the IAC. The IAC offers three major benefits to the world of amateur film making; the magazine; the music licence and BIAFF. Of these the most important is BIAFF; yes any organization needs a method of communicatio...

Re: Creative Soundscape Videos

Thanks John; interesting and helpful. Very helpful; I have owned Zoom recorders for years but never thought of attaching one to a boom pole; a wonderful solution for that darned cable problem!! Also as a substitute for radio mics. Thanks again John; I look forward to the continuing series.

Re: BIAFF 2018

Have just sent off my registration and yes; that GBP 549 is a shock to the checkbook. Probably prohibitive to a younger couple with growing family and mortgage. We have just enjoyed our local Halloween Guerilla Festival here; 19 films entered, max run time 5 minutes; additional non-competition films...

Re: BIAFF 2018

A quick reading of the charity guidelines explains that "benefit" applies to trustees. So what is the position of those of us who subscribe to the IAC; I assume we are just "donors" and can claim the donation as a tax benefit (not for me here in the USA). So; are we outside the rules for trustees or...

Re: BIAFF 2018

In my opinion the importance of BIAFF to the IAC is central to its survival and must not be underestimated. The dedicated website and using Filmfreeway are both excellent ways of extending its reach. I am still convinced that a student section would provide an important addition and a potential sour...

Re: BIAFF 2018

Judging: in my opinion the days of judges watching films on inadequate TVs with poor sound in hotel rooms are surely over. I have enjoyed the privilege of being involved in three on-line judging and screening events where I watched the entrants on my 55 inch 4K TV with excellent sound. In the case o...
