Titles

Are people conflating title sequences with titles? Anyway, to the list! All the President's Men The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover The Crying Game An American Werewolf in London A Matter of Life and Death The Desperate Hours Silent Running Night of the Hunter Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

With regard to giving the audience what they want to see, frankly, who are you to say what I want to watch? With the approach of saying "films such as 'abc' do well so I''l make a film like 'abc' you have an audience that is self selecting. Make the film you want to make, that must be your only...

Re Fraught's idea involving youtube, I've put a movie or two on there, but I'm not sure how to get it hits and high visability. I'll try uploading a few more and see how popular they are. We could make a DVD and distribute it for visability, DVD's are pennies to make, Just a thought on the DVD give...

Re: Age

I remember when the club i belonged to got a 60'ish year old guy to run the show (ex-BBC), the first thing he asked us to do was make a short documentary on how to make a cup of tea! Now i know people need to learn the basics... but isn't our hobby all about having fun too!? Did you consider that o...

In a devil's advocate kind of way, I thought I might say that we needn't worry, since often our films could be described as fitting both definitions of "amateur" quite easily!

Interesting note about El Mariachi is that since there wasn't much dialogue and the camera was so noisy, he didn't shoot sync sound. He shot the scene, and then had the actors run through the scene again to record the dialogue on a separate recorder. Check out youtube for the following - http://www....

I made a dolly from a design by Dan Selakovich in his excellent book Killer Camera Rigs - check out http://dvcamerarigs.com/killercontents.html for some demo movies. We (Perth Camcorder Club) used the dolly on our 2005 film 'Deliverance' and in our as yet unfinished "Derailed", to good eff...

I seem to remember that TV channels used to (late at night or for important films) show movies in their original aspect ratio. But then that sort of petered out when the European Broadcasting Union started pushing 16:9 as the acceptable widescreen ratio. I clearly remember C4 having captions up sayi...

My understanding of the timeline might go off the beam here and there (but I'm sure I can count on Film Thurso to correct me). Here we go: The 4:3 (Academy) ratio comes about because it is the shape left after the inclusion of an optical soundtrack on a 4 perf 35mm negative. TV come along and are 4:...

I don't think it is true any longer that we identify a particular type of film with a particular studio. And certainly a particular logo in front of a film is no guarantee of quality. It is however true that you know what you'll get if you see the Jerry Bruckheimer logo at the start of a movie. The ...

I would agree that having a clock or leader on a tape is sensible for the reasons you describe. Similarly a DVD for competitions may also benefit from clocking. As for the AVI (not Quicktime?':D') on a disc, here we would have to part company. Fine if an event organiser has asked for your film in th...

Where to buy passport

The Perth Club already had theirs when I joined, but I'll try and find out where the other club bought theirs from last year.

I just thought I'd pitch in. Our club here in Perth uses the fender system and it is indeed very sturdily built (though in plastic rather than gunmetal) The whole thing is self-contained, packing into a portable (or, more accurately, luggable) thing the size of a small suitcase. When in use the spea...

One of the arguments I've heard put forward in favour of a dedicated playback deck like the sony is the low latency of the units. For instance my Canon XM1 is lovely, but it is incredibly slow to respond to commands from my editing software (both in premiere pro and final cut). It is not much better...

HDV competition entries

Hats off to AMPS for leading the way in accepting HDV entries. Just because no-one submitted in that format doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to.
