Re: BIAFF RESULTS 2023
There was an interesting discussion in this thread (March 3rd-8th) between Michael Slowe and Howard-Smith about the pros and cons of working as a lone video maker. Despite their obvious differences of style they are both lone workers who maintain personal control over all their productions. Although...

Re: THE MOVIE MAKER TEN BEST COMPETITION
Thanks Howard for sharing the link of the collection of Ten Best Results. http://www.pathefilm.uk/amateurfilm/tenbest.htm. I had never seen that before and it brought back many memories of all the programmes I saw from the late 60s. Naturally I turned to 1978 when I travelled down to the National Fi...

Re: BIAFF 2021 RESULTS
Having just opened Wednesday morning's post I can now announce that Howard-Smith has also won the World Record for claiming his Master Movie Making Fellowship. It makes you think he was eagerly awaiting it! CONGRATULATIONS from Michael Gough, IAC Fellowship Officer.

Obviously my spell checker has been spreading red herrings to make Midsomer Murders more challenging. It did the same thing last week with Murder of the Oriental Empress.

Re: BIAFF 2018 AT HARROGATE
Hi, Regarding Pulse, like many I was stunned by the choreography of action and movement covered in a single shot. It was fascinating hearing how much rehearsal it needed and how many actual takes. I understood the basic premise of a man coming to terms with his sexuality but was unsure of the symbol...

Re: The Revenant
Robert writes about the bleakness of "The Revenant" to which I would add the coldness. We know that it was filmed in the coldest of natural locations with actors crawling through snow and being thrown into icy waters. It was particularly ironic when Linda and I saw it. We had gone into tow...

Re: The Revenant
Hi Willy, In answer to your question about how the terrifying scene with the bear was film can I suggest you follow this link http://www.theprovince.com/entertainment/movie-guide/Meet+stunt+bear+kicks+crap+DiCaprio+Revenant/11652700/story.html For me the most memorable bit of this film was the wonde...

Re: BIAFF 2015 RESULTS
I’ve been out of touch for a while so I am a bit late to congratulate the excellent BIAFF results, particular from Jill, Geoff, Bob and Howard. Well done and I certainly look forward to seeing you and your films in Sittingbourne. With regards to my own video “The Empty Experience” I would like to th...

Re: BIAFF 2015 entries
There is no scientifically accurate way to compare videos. Judgements of art are subjective and I support the valuable and difficult contribution of competition judges. However it doesn't prevent the maker from feeling disappointed if a result is less than anticipated. Disappointment is personal and...

Re: FVM MAGAZINE - DECEMBER 2014
Tim introduces a very interesting idea which deserves a new thread of it’s own. I enjoy friendly discussion of videos and have certainly benefited myself, even when it was someone else’s video under analysis. No one has ever written to me to complain about my judge’s comments. I can recall one occas...

Re: FVM MAGAZINE - DECEMBER 2014
I’m sure there are many forum contributors who think that this has deteriorated into a rather sterile discussion. As John correctly described it is “just going round and round in circles”. I understand and accept the reasons given by Lee for being unable to put the video “The Apparition” on the inte...

Re: Where to from here part 2
Like Dave I am delighted with the appearance of John at the Council. It was a wonderful surprise to suddenly see him across the table from me. He was demonstrating the principle that if you really want to move the IAC forward you must first stick your head above the parapet. I felt he enjoyed the ex...

Re: FVM MAGAZINE - DECEMBER 2014
I apologise that this is again diverting momentarily from the original thread. I have just returned from an IAC Council meeting in Derby, a return journey of more than 300 miles at my own expense in time and money. I was also one of the judges that judged the SOCO Regional Competition but did not th...

Re: BIAFF IAC Professionalism?
Hi, In Lee’s contribution (Sept 23rd) I think he has inadvertently provided the root cause to the dilemma felt (by some) about the film “Pigeon Post”. He said "Fairness should not only be done but seen to be done".....! The trouble is we can all see the face of the actor and recognise him ...

Re: Have travel movies ever won festivals ?
Willy's question about travel films reminds me of a kind of intellectual snobbery that has been around for decades. Taking pictures "on holiday" has been enjoyed by family photographers ever since cameras were invented. However boring the neighbours with them has been the butt of many joke...
