Re: BIAFF 2024 - yes or no?

BTW I've not seen any comments here on Paul Kittel's excellent promo for BIAFF
I sincerely hope he used some templates for this as it would take days to make all these edits manually:

Re: BIAFF 2024 - yes or no?

Having now got a proper job (I was made redundant when the school I worked at went into administration at Christmas), I shall be returning to BIAFF this year after a finacially induced absense last year. Boy, how I missed it! I'm so looking forward to seeing some excellent films. I hope Werner's &qu...

Shock Horror!

Surrey Border Movie Makers has a new member - but that's not the shock! Under the "How did you hear about us?" question he answered "IAC Search"!

Never assume no-one looks.

Sad news indeed. My thoughts are with Joy.

Re: Where next for the IAC?

I think it is probably still attractive to filmmaking enthusiasts to meet up with people who share their enthusiasm. But the fact that the numbers of people turning up to clubs, or to inter club events, or to festivals, would seem to suggest othewise. And I think it is still attractive to show film...

Re: Where next for the IAC?

That could mean that the proportion of IAC members who are entering BIAFF is declining. Yes, it might make an interesting statistic. I wonder if anyone actually keeps these figures? Perhaps we need to make BIAFF entrants aware that the competition can only survive if more of them become IAC members...

Re: UNICA 2023

The results are in https://unica.movie/2023

Gary Hewitt's "Dig", winner of BIAFF 2023, won a UNICA Gold medal and won Best in Competition. Well done Gary.
Congrats also to Suzi Topolska, whose inventive "Adventures of Cowboy Kale" was awarded a diploma.

Re: Open Film Night Summer Chalenge

A benefit for me (and I gues there are others like me) is it forces me to make a film. No matter how good an idea I might think I have for a film, I get so bogged down considering potential problems with making it (or even deciding which is the best of several good ideas), I find it very difficult t...

Re: What is the difference between an AV and a film?

These discussions rear their ugly head from time to time and people can get all het up about it, often out of all proportion. But that's not surprising. We do become unreasonably irate about things about which we are passionate. Sometimes things change as a result, sometimes the same old arcuments c...

Re: What is the difference between an AV and a film?

I think that's a fine line which an audiences might find it difficult to see! If it exists at all, I suspect it is subconscious. Certainly I think a film audience would expect to see high quality moving images.. I don't think that's necessarily true. A high quality historical documentary might comp...

Re: Judging-FVM June

We may all have different opinions, but I also prefer those top two prizes to go to different films. But if, in the judges opinion, the Best in Festival happens to be made by a British entrant, we have no choice but to award it both. I have judged many a club/inter-club/regional festival where we h...

Re: BIAFF 2024 - yes or no?

Is it just we older hands who prefer a live event? I was going to say "No" when I realised I am one of those "older hands". Despite not attending myself this year (which turned out to be just as well as, for family reasons, I'd have had to travel back home Friday night anyway) I...

Re: What is the difference between an AV and a film?

I suspect the distiction has blurred to have become meaningless and I wonder if it is today more relevant to the audience than the product itself. Here's a hypoythesis: Audiences for AV expect very high quality images and sound, used creatively to illustrate an interesting narrative (be that drama, ...

Re: YouTube cut my video short

Jill, much better to put stuff on Vimeo. Unless you want people to come across it when searching  In the same way VHS won against the technically superior Betamax, YouTube beat Vimeo in popularity and therefore liklihood of your film being seen. I'm not sure the technical agruments hold water...

Re: August FVM

I just returned home to discover two packages. One containing my usual copy of FVM and another containing a further TWO copies. I can only assume someone erroneously has my name as recipient for a club - though which club, I have no idea!
