Re: UNICA and the age old question

but when people complain that "Cinematography" is an archaic word, which no one uses normally and whose meaning is a bit fuzzy in the common mind, Really? I see it (over) used all the time. Most of the time in the context of "make your shots look more cinematic" (the meaning of which is, admitedly,...

Re: UNICA and the age old question

I think that Howard-Smith has really hit on something here. The definition that he quotes is us EXACTLY! As an adjective could not avocationary fit the bill? I got the dreaded red line when typing that so maybe not. IAC would then still be the apt initials. The beauty is it is the same definition a...

Re: IAC MUSIC LICENCE

But the BIAFF judges hardly ever commented on the music I'd used. I try Howard, I try. No-one has ever mentioned the music when I've created it either - whether that's from scratch (eg Tudor Rap) or using downloaded MIDI files as a basis (as Greece is the Word) - although in those cases they do men...

Re: IAC MUSIC LICENCE

It absolutely does not cover internet use, Roy, as stated in red in the middle of this page https://www.theiac.org.uk/iac/copyright/copyright-clearance-scheme.html You Tube is generally not a problem as they have deals with various publishers allowing its use in return for some revnue from advertisi...

Re: IAC MUSIC LICENCE

Indeed you can. This is just as well as the IAC manages to obtain sponors prizes of CDs of production music for various events including BIAFF (and I've been fortunate enough to receive some). This does not come with any licence so unless you have the IAC (or other) licence, it's of no practical use...

Re: UNICA and the age old question

Howard's suggestion has the added benefit that, beginning with the same letter as Amateur, many existing abbreviations could be used. On the downside, I only see it as a noun rather than an adjective wheich means it can't really be used to describe what we might previously as described as an amateur...

UNICA and the age old question

UNICA President Dave Watterson has raised the old chetnut of what we call ourselves again in his recent UNICA newsletter: "I make a plea for one right now: we cannot call ourselves “amateur” or “non-professional” because both of those adjectives are commonly equated with poor quality. Please let us ...

Re: FILM & VIDEO MAKER MAGAZINE

Yes, indeed we could make the photos smaller, but why would we (other than to reduce space in the magazine) and why would this bring us into the 21st century? If it was up for discussion I'd argue precisely the opposite! 1) I find the photos filling the column-width of the new three colunm format, o...

Re: ENHANCED DBS CHECKS

You are absolutely right, Jill. You cannot apply as an individual. I've filmed where schools have done it on my behalf (yes, it costs them) and it is only valid for the organisation that has applied. Martine and I have considered setting ourselves up as a company simply so we can apply for DBS check...

2)The comments in this thread - I hope a Council member or a Forum member can summarise this discussion for the next issue of FVM so that it will be read by many more members. If no-one has time, I'll volunteer. I, for one, am very disappointed that there was no mention of this very interesting thr...

Re: SW Utah Horrofest

Working my way through them. Thanks for sharing Ned. When I saw "horror" I immediately turned off as the genre does nothing for me and I was expecting a bit of a gorefest, but from what I've seen so far, it appears to be much more psychological horror than blood & guts. There are certainly some very...

Re: Da Vinci Resolve 15 & possibly 16

At the risk of going off topic, thanks Michael. The split screen in this instance is supposed to conjour up the idea of seaside postcards but also allowed me to crop in or use lower resolution footage of choirs which came from various sources. One such source for a couple of choir shots (no problems...

Re: Da Vinci Resolve 15 & possibly 16

I've used it and like the workflow. I struggled with it (and gave up) for a 2hr theatrical production, but I put this down to lack of perseverance and the fact I've used Vegas for 14 years. I did not find it as good as Vegas for audio (then again, I don't think anything is as good as Vegas for audio...

Re: Jameela Boardman's Article FVM October 2019

I'm not sure becoming a 'members-only' club would help, because the same issues apply. My only reason for suggesting that was that I was under the impression (from comments from the Council at AGMs I have attended) that the few suggetions from the floor were quashed due to the fact they would been ...
