Re: Website providers

My recommendation is Weebly. It is free - though as is often the case they sometimes tempt you to buy a more advanced system. It does not add advertisements to your website as some free services do. It asks only for a mention of its name in the page footnote. You get a free domain which includes the...

Re: Jameela

My least favourite term for what we do is "unprofessional filming" - which is used in parts of Eastern Europe. "Non-professional" is bad enough! The one I usually use outside Britain is Ned Cordery's suggestion of "non-commercial". Instinctively I do not like a negative definition. I don't want to b...

Re: Jameela

It would be a pity to lose the perspective you bring, Ned. We are all too insular in Britain. Please keep contributing on these ideas.

As for social media ... I find my own Facebook and Twitter feeds remarkably quiet. Is it because with so little happening, there is less to discuss?

Re: Jameela

The job of a committee is not to meet, its job is to get things done. There are indeed IAC Council members who have been there for many years, some for many decades, and who do not now contribute in terms of actual work. They may have helpful experience and advice, but that is not enough. I suspect ...

Re: BIAFF 2020 RESULTS

Who knows? The pundits keep giving different information and various medical friends keep saying life cannot really start getting back to normal until a reliable vaccine has been created and is widely available. In the meantime you can find many of the films in most star categories online at YouTube...

Re: BIAFF 2020 RESULTS

Who plans to come to BIAFF in October? This is a matter of concern, because though there are floods of entries in the competition, the number of people attending BIAFF has been declining. Obviously a certain amount of guesswork is needed. None of us knows when the restrictions on public life will be...

Re: UNICA 2021

It was pointed out to me that the posts from here on were more about the future of the IAC than about UNICA 2021 ... so to avoid confusion I have split them into to threads. This one will continue on the theme of UNICA2021 A new topic "Re-think the IAC" takes thoughts on that topic. Nothing is lost!...

UNICA 2021

This is an open letter I have sent to IAC Council. I hope it is self-explanatory. Tomorrow is ours to win or lose “All our charitable objectives focus on promoting cinematography and the public’s appreciation of such arts.” (IAC Memorandum of Association) 2020 is blighted by pandemic. Every country ...

Re-think the IAC?

The topic "UNICA 2021" started to slip - naturally perhaps - into discussion about the IAC's future. Thanks - for a suggestion that it might be helpful to separate the two to make it easy for newcomers to see what they want to. I started this thread with Ned Cordery's reaction to the "UNICA 2021" to...

Re: Communication

I share that problem, Tim. Jan and I have been trying to standardise on Zoom. It works well and has the usual handy sidelines like a chat board and screen sharing. It also works on all systems. If anyone want to start using it, Jan is a great resource and has talked lots of people through the set up...

Re: COVID-19

None of us can know how long all these restrictions and safety-measures must be maintained. The British government keeps saying it will make recommendations that over-70s should stay home for 14 to 16 weeks ... but has not yet done so. For various reasons the virus reached Britain a week or two late...

Re: COVID-19

This news just in ... Tuesday 17th March 7pm BIAFF moves to October The May 8-10 event in Stratford is cancelled. Results of the competition will still be sent to entrants by the end of March. It will cost IAC quite a lot of money in lost deposits etc. Wait for announcements on the BIAFF website [ww...

Re: UNICA and the age old question

"Avocational" is very good, it fits the meaning and - conveniently - the initials of IAC and UNICA ...

but when people complain that "Cinematography" is an archaic word, which no one uses normally and whose meaning is a bit fuzzy in the common mind, what chance would "avocational" have?
